Looking for some active noise cancelling headphones to use when I travel - trains and planes.

I'm probably going to buy something from eBay for under £100 and see Bose quietcomfort 15s come up now and again. Looks like they had good reviews back in the day.

Anything else to look at? Or suggestions for vendors?

Goldring Ns1000 Expedition- got a pair of these a couple of months ago and used them on a flight to Tukey and USA and decent sound quality and comfort

The Goldrings are excellent for the price, but the Bose are a lot better in my opinion.

I got a good price on the QC15s a while ago, so passed my Goldrings onto my wife. I just got an excellent deal on the latest Bose QC25s, so will now pass the QC15s on.

There is not that much difference between the QC15s and QC25s in my opinion. In fact, I slightly prefer the sound quality on the older model. The noise cancelling is slightly improved on the newer model, but the 15s were so good already that it doesn't really matter too much.

I got some Bose over ear QC15's from ebay, I love them, they transform some journeys... I highly recommend them, and couldnt be without them sometimes.

Be careful though buying second hand, as there are fakes around:

I brought some from a guy who still had the receipt, I also rang up Bose UK with the serial number, they confirmed the date and location of when & where they were purchased, so I knew they were genuine, I would advise anyone to do the same.

Another vote for Bose QC15s. I paid £250 for them as an impulse buy at Heathrow a year or two ago.
Excellent sound quality, comfort and performance. I was worried about spending so much on headphones, but have never regretted it.
They come in a really nice sturdy case too, which makes transporting them in my hand luggage really easy. And room in the case for my ipod touch. Won't leave home on a business trip or holiday without them.

The noise cancelling is really effective, which means on an aircraft you don't have to push the volume up to deafening levels in order to hear clearly. Sound quality is superb with excellent clarity, but you'd hate them if you're into Dr Dres. There is bass, but only the correct amount.

Other nice touches are a double jack adapter - airline standard, so you can use them for the inflight movie with sound to both ears. And a special iphone lead with inline mic for phone calls.
Mine is the special edition - ear pads and head band are brown, which make them look more quality.

+1 for the QC15's. Had mine 5 years and wouldn't get on a flight without them now.

You may find some Sennheiser PXC 350s for around the 100 mark. I don't fly without them, often just for the NC without sound playing. They also play music OK without power/batteries

I too got the goldrings - but buying 2nd hand watch for cracks in the headband - mine did after a while and I looked after them and always in the case......................but I do have big head.

Replaced them with Sennheiser MMx450 bluetooth sound cancelling which were and still are excellent. Dont think they are as good as the Bose, but the Bose are wired not bluetooth

Tried my mates Dr Drie £300 ones on a plane recently as was not impressed.... bass heavey, no clarity .. not what I'd expect from £150/ normal headphones.... ok noise cancelling added, but I am sure there are better ...... I went back to oem iPhone headphones ..... yes I would like noise cancelling but ones that deliver decent sound

what he said. there are two reasons for not buying them, they sound sh*t, and you look like a mindless sheep.
