TVR S 2.8 Door/Window alignment

t's not the door that has dropped, it's the glass. Not a difficult job.

Hardest part is to remove the door card.

It may be held by some screws as well as push in plastic 'things' and the window winder (assuming manual and not electric). . Once the card can be pulled away from the door then push it up to uncouple from the top of the door - it will still be attached to the door opening mechanism which does not need to be disconnected.

You should now be able to see the door glass - this has a metal strip and bracket along the lower edge. The bracket is bolted (2 bolts) onto the X lifting mechanism and it will probably be these bolts - located in slots - which have moved, slacken off and re-align, tighten and then temporarily refit the window winder and try it.

Once acceptable then as per Haynes manual speak re-assembly is the reverse os taking apart!!

thanks for the reply mate, yeah its manual windows, sounds alot easier than i thought actually, going to have a bash at it one of the days this week after work, will post up a few pics as i do it.

Just having a bash at it now panels all unclipped but the window winder seems to be holding it in place?

as said the window winder needs to be undone and the door cars will then move out of the way - still held by the door opening cable (this does not need to be detached)

Hi, I've took the screw out of the front of the winder but its still seems to be firmly in place

Hi had a look at that seems to be for electric windows? I can't see no window winder. My struggle is getting the actual window winder off I've unscrewed it but still on firmly and holding door card in place

A lot of winder handles (don't know about TVR) are held on by a hidden clip, but I'd have thought unlikely to have a clip and a screw?

Have you tried a pair of levers (or screwdrivers) behind it and lever off square and evenly, may have been a bit loose 'n floppy with worn splines and some one has Araldited it on?

Can anyone comment as to whether that looks like an original style handle or a "go faster" aftermarket item?

Hi, did try to loosen a clip if there was one but still no luck.big I reach up into the speaker hole I can feel a nut around where the window winder is but not sure if this is or isn't what's holding the door trim in place

Only familiar with later electric window set up, there is a little (8mm?) nut up above the speaker hole, as pictured in the link Robinlarry posted, but the winder handle still has to come off to get the door card off I'd have thought?

Yeah the hidden bolts there but its already free as I jiggle the door trim only area that feels tight in is the window winder, haven't got a clue how to get it off as unscrewing it didn't work.. S1 owners please come to my rescue! 2days trying to get this door trim off and still no luck

Sorry I can't be of much help, it's been so long since I had it off, I can't remember how to do it.
However, I would have thought that with the centre screw removed from the winder spindle, the winder should just pull straight off.
Put something behind it to protect the trim and try carefully and evenly levering it off.
Some cars have a pin which can be pushed out of the winder spindle stem, usually square drive, not splined. This pin is accessed by pressing the trim back to expose the winder stem, but this type wouldn't normally have a centre screw as well.

Hi, thanks for the reply, yeah I would of thought it would prize off but it seems to be in solid and im weary of damaging the door trim. Is there anyone local to Birmingham who could possibly come and help me? (Would really appreciate it)

My early 1987 S1 also has the manual winder. No clip-just a screw. The winder should come right off. Maybe there is some corrosion? I assume you've removed the two "hidden" nuts already. There also may be a U-shaped clamp towards the bottom of the door car held on by a hidden bolt. One of my cards had that as well.

Auto parts shop usually sell a kit of plastic interior removal parts. There is one that lets you pry off the handle without damaging the plastic covering.

I'd have a very close look to see if there is a clip like Adrian@ is indicating. Mine didn't, it just fell off after taking the centre screw out.

Hi, literally the only thing holding it in place is the manual winder itself? The rest of the door card is free from end to end and all plastic plugs from the bottom have been free'd. I'll have another go tomorrow at prizing it off it does lift up abit but just that damn manual winder is keeping it from being free'd

Hi, the manual winder literally won't budge? It's tight to the interior door card making it difficult to get anything down the back to prize it forward but I'll persevere

Hmmm, Cheshire, Lancs, Teeside, Essex, South Coast.......
None of us are really close enough to come and break it for you I'm afraid
I reckon you're gonna have to have a go yourself. Or wait until we have a meet up somewhere.
If you decide on the latter, in the meantime you could leave the window slightly open and put a top cover over the roof to keep it dry

Just remembered, Adrian is not far away in Coventry. Book it in with him, he is very good at all things TVR.

Just out of interest does the other side come off easy?



PS I'm in Redditch, not too far away, my hourly rates are very reasonable (minimum call-out charge 4 hours)
