On the British GP trailer just before Top Gear started tonight, it said this could be Button's last Home GP - I googled a little bit and there is an article on the Daily Mail website saying the same.

The last two races, in Canada and Hungary, were particular low points for McLaren. Neither of their cars finished either race.
Hungary? Really??

When interviewed at Goodwood he said next year he'd be there for all three days. ..make of that what you will

I noticed that, wasn't it something like it will be good to be able to spend all three days there? When I heard it I thought it sounded like an admission that he would have more free time and therefore probably no longer in F1.

Would he really want another year there after this year?

He should have gone to WEC. Is there a program in the pipeline for McLaren to run a car there next year?

As long as it's not powered by Honda....

Definitely 1 year- he wanted 3 years but Ron said no. This is polarised with Alonso only wanting one year but Mclaren insisted on a 2+1. Alonso does have a performance clause though so he can walk at the end of this year.
Well, depends on what the performance clause said... wink

At the Austrian GP press conference; when asked about future plans to do WEC, Alonso said "maybe next year" hehe

McLaren multi year contracts are often only an option for the team to take up for the future years (i.e. Button has a contract to race in 2014 but will only race in 2015 if McLaren exercise their option).

See also, back in 2007 McLaren could have partnered Alonso with Raikkonen as their contract with Kimi extended to 2007 and beyond. However, that option included a guaranteed salary of $50m per year. McLaren didn't want to pay as much as that so allowed their option to expire with the hope that they could re-sign Kimi with a lower salary.

Ron Dennis has said more than once that it is a fixed 3 year deal with no allowance for it to end early. Time may tell I guess, but there is no way they can force a driver to race I guess, but would be able to stop them racing elsewhere.

Both drivers need to go on to better thing.

Mclaren, if sticking to Honda, could use O.Turvey and another, and receive the same results .

1 year + 1 year option. However, with Stoffel Vandoorne waiting in the wings, I suspect the option will not be taken up by McLaren.

At the moment they have 4 points more than Manor and not likely to bag any more although they are hoping for a double points finish in Hungary and that's about their lot
What makes you say that?

It's interesting to read about the contracts. I understand that Alonso has zero ability to exit his 3 year contract. I also hear Button only has a deal for 2015 only.

But that's all hearsay. I haven't seen the contracts. Has anyone else? If not, then all we write is based on conjecture....which we cannot back up with hard facts.

Whilst it isn't the contract there were plenty of reports around the beginning of May quoting Ron Dennis as saying that it is a straight 3 year contract with no options - one report is here http://www1.skysports.com/f1/news/24184/9831212/fe...

After the lack of commitment last year about keeping him and the absolute dogpig of a car they've given him this year (and last), I would quite like to see him walk into a series where he can win something again.

For well over £20 million a year at 30 plus years of age I would be happy to develop a car and collect the money so long as Honda gave me a number of car and bike franchises after the relationship ends. Alonso make money, lots of it and looks ahead to Le Mans and WEC.

Jenson should have walked and gone elsewhere. I am guessing he hoped for more from Honda with their history and nobody says no to £6-8 million or whatever, tax free for a one yea deal, plus all of the benefits McLaren offer.

Your saying that as a fan though.

The reality is lots of travel being away from family I'm sure the glamour soon wears of and it becomes a grind.

This is why wec is so attractive, they only race 6 times a year.

It's not attractive though is it? No driver has turned down an F1 gig to go drive in the WEC. Drivers who get dropped from F1 go and take up pretty much anything to keep them driving in a competitive series.

Webber did.

The likes of button and alonso won't be getting dropped from f1 , they will be choosing to have more time with family yet still get there racing kick in another series.
