I think this might have been me. You sure it was grey. I was out working but was in a dark blue 3 series M27 Pompey/Eastleigh.
Maybe it was you! It was dark so can't be sure on colour. 2 officers, one female the other male. Male was driving and I was stopped at the top of the hill on the a31. The female booked me while the male officer checked the car and noted the front tyres were low.

It was an unmarked patrol car
You have to be verrry careful on the M6 'twixt Stafford and Warrington at night now when progressing.
I try to avoid the M6, but always useful know.

Very reassuring to hear plod is out there, protecting us from Armageddon.

It does seem more than a bit strange that the police service says it can't cope with funding cuts, yet manages to run unmarked traffic cars on motorways in the dead of night
Even stranger that at a time when criminals are moving about in an area with plenty of nasty accidents happening and p!ssheads roaming about and you think they shouldn't be out there confused
If you give me a breakdown of crims caught, moving about that location, and accidents and pissheads caught, in the middle of the night, compared to other non motorway areas thereabouts, I will reassess my thoughts...smile

I got a 21 day ban and £625 fine for 118mph on the M1 at 2.30am. Overtook an unmarked Audi from a completely out-of-county force that was returning home after a big operation. Even he apologised - said if I'd been doing 99 he'd have let me go. Held my hands up to it, said I was a dhead, but needed my car for my job. Oddly my OH was also pregnant at the time, didn't mention it, seemed like pushing it a bit.

Hefty fine. 3 points and a 6 month ban. £200 in 1985. Get a solicitor and it won't happen. Germany. Please think of the children. Welcome to Pistonheads.
Best answer on the thread.

If you want to travel at over 70 on our motorways, it seems it would be better to do it during the day when it's busier as you're less likely to be picked out. At night, on a clear road (when it's safer to do so), you're more likely to get caught, also because there's more likely to be a speed trap. Easy pickings I guess.

Last night wasn't great. It's my own fault I know but on a nice quiet stretch of motorway at 1am on a Sunday night I got nicked doing just over 120mph. Not good but if you take these risks you have to face the consequences.

Currently I have a clean licence and I need my licence for work. I won't loose my job as I am the director but it will be a pain.

What do you lot reckon I will get?? Worst case and most likely it's a ban. With a very good solicitor and a lucky mag on the day I'm hoping (praying) for 6 points and a bigger fine.

Thoughts please guys? Btw the police were very nice and just doing their job, I knew what I had done and made my bed so now I must lay in it!
I got caught doing 120 on a dry day with light traffic on the M5 a few years back. Got a solicitor, I'm a company director, need job for work, good character references, clean license. I got 28 day ban, £340 fine and no points on my license at the end of it. I hired a driver for £15 an hour for business and wife at the time drove me. I also went on holiday for a week of it. It was difficult but OK.

I posted here a couple of years ago when my friend got caught doing 119mph on the M2 in Kent, so fairly recent.

He got a 56 day ban and around £1,200 fine presumably based on earnings.

Ah it wasn't me. You were stopped by a dark blue 3 series though. We have a few.

When you think about it in certain cars it only takes a fraction of a second to be doing these sorts of speeds. Not excusing it of course, but as crimes go a quick squirt on an empty road leading to not being allowed to drive for 28+ days is quite scary. frown

Grey BMW 330D by any chance?? The M3 & M27 is always patrolled by unmarked cars, sometimes a black soda VW's but mostly BMW's
Yes it was a grey 3 series 4 door saloon. No badge on the back.
He nearly got me on the M3 a few days ago. Fortunately it's my regular commute and had spotted him pulling a couple of unfortuantes over recent weeks. I had just joined the motorway and made progress up to cruising speed outside lane clearing traffic. Settled down, observed mirrors again and said grey 3-series looms into view. So glad I instantly recognised the unmarked car. Backed off, pulled into middle lane when safe to re-merge. Copper pulls alongside, still in outside lane and gives me a good look over, but obviously decides that I was aware enough not to warrant a pull. If I was speeding it would only have been momentary, but enough to attract his attention.

What the hell are you driving that can get from 70 ish to 120 MPH in a fraction of a second?

I got caught doing 57 in a 30 in 2009. I managed to get away with 6 points and a fine (cant remember how much). He did let me off my sidelight bulb being out though!

At the end of the day they're only doing a job - sounds like you have the right attitude OP smile

My weekend car, the ThrustSSC. tongue out

Yeah, maybe "fraction of a second" was hyperbolic. Just meant as crimes go it can take only a few seconds, and feel completely victimless, to result in potentially huge problems in life.

And how do you "clear traffic"? Sounds a lot like flashing your headlights and tailgating? Sounds like a bit of a shame you wern't pulled if you actually were doing that.

So there was more than one tug for high speed that night then?!?!

What a strange, but not atypical assumption here. No I wasn't behaving like a jerk, if that's what you're implying. Clearing traffic merely by pulling into the (clear) outside lane in order to pass traffic in lanes 1 & 2.

There isn't more likely to be a speed 'trap' at night.

I got pulled for not having a red flag man in front of me in '03 or so.
Only cost me 2 guineas.

Aah it's one of those terms that sounds far worse than it is. Apologies for calling you a jerk smile
