They were renown for torque steering with standard power. They must be a real handful at 300bhp plus.
I had one of these (#4333) between 2006-2009 had 275BHP 310 FT/lbs and i found in some ways it had less torque steer with more power, mainly as would over come the tyres to easy. In the wet joining a motorway it would forever spin 2nd & 3rd gear, and in really heavy rain 4th gear, but with the map and actuator it boosted very heavy at around 3500RPM.
The dif was a bit of a pain down country roads where it was uneven and would never give you loads of confidence, i had a Racing Puma (#007) for a year at the same time and that was far better down the lanes.

Is it really that expensive when you consider its an unmolested example? these are quite rare to find still in standard form.

Sure you could probably have one for £6k, but its going to be a thrashed/crashed rotter. I'd guess if you found one at that price you'd be putting more money into it to make it right than if you'd have gone for this one instead.

Despite its many public flaws, I'd still have one. And I could live with the interior thumbup
I just hope if ownership ability becomes a reality for me that it isn't a case of "never drive your dream car"

(Maybe I'm looking through rose tinted specs too as its always been a wanted car to me)

Wasn't there a lot of variation in the way individual examples handled the torque steer or am I dreaming this?? I got the impression that if you found a good one it was sublime but others could be utter pigs, luck of the draw type scenario. I still think they are the best looking hot hatches of modern times, the two tone interior wouldn't really offend me either. 16 grand for one with 14k on the clock doesn't seem that bad to me assuming it was in impeccable condition

The Renaultsport s are very good cars but will massively depriciate where as the rs will only stay the same or increase in value lit could be a good investment if you keep it a while
Sorry but I buy hot hatches to drive not worry about its residuals,if you want to buy cars simply because you don't want to lose any money then buying 200 quid snotters is were its at or maybe an exotic worrying about residuals on a hatchback that I do over 20k a year in is quite comical to me it's a Ford Focus not a Bugatti type 25

Ford changed the map so they delivered the power different i think was the main difference. so later ones may have been better, but when i was in RSOC most converted back to the old map. so many were modded and i only went out as a passanger in other cars its hard to say.
I couldnt pay 16k for one when i paid less for mine 3 years old, but after 3 years i sold it for just a tad less than i paid but lost the money i spent on it (as expected) but i hadnt spent alot tuning mine

In terms of value for money, owning the Focus is going to be much cheaper if as expected it doesn't deprecate - so for what it's going to cost you in the long run, you couldn't afford to run the Renault on the Ford budget.

Considering prices of the chav-tastic mk2 I think these have been criminally under-valued for years. At one point you could buy two clean mk1s for the price of a mk2, one to rag and one to appriciate!

You should post that on the RSOC forum. No doubt someone will know who the bellend of an owner is. I'll hazard a guess that it's probably going to be one of the many young "gangsta innit bruv" types who seem to have been buying them the past couple of years when prices were rock bottom.

They tend to be the same owners that spend all their £££ on badly fitted modifications, but nothing on maintenance, then whinge about the running costs / parts costs, try to bodge on some entry level focus parts in an attempt to keep the car on the road on the cheap, and then wonder why they have problems.

On the last four occasions I have changed car, this has been on the shortlist, only to drop off again when I see that interior....
shame as the exterior is pretty much perfect...
Yeah it's shocking. You're best picking up an ST170/full Recaro interior and keeping the stock one in the garage -- right right at the back of the garage..

I think it's a fair point for me anyway the re-sale value has to be quite good to protect some of my hard earned cash , I don't think you would run this car as a daily driver it's far too good ,that's why I have a 3k clio 182 for daily use which is a great car !

Ive had mine for 6 years now ... best car I have ever owned (and ive had a hell of a lot over the 30 years ive had cars).

interior goes with the car ... I really like it and the Mk1 focus dash is one of the best designed dashboards ever made...miles ahead of its time when it came out in 1998.

People mentioned the Meganes .... well I like a car to be handsome ...all the Meganes cannot be called that in any shape or form ... designed by Stevie Wonder lol.

So you're circa 47 years old, you think every Megane was designed by Stevie Wonder lol'. And the Mk1 Focus dashboard is one of the best designed dashboards ever made....

wow.

Meganes are shockingly ugly wherevthevfocus looks about perfect for a hot hatch.

Also depreciation or lack thereof is a big factor in buying cars to many people. I'd rather spend money on petrol than depreciation makung it quite a bargain car really.

The interior is great! Sparco seats, the blue is great for a second car / classic.
