According to the BBC we are sending a 9ft high plastic fence to France to stop the migrants being able to get on the trucks.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-33316358

In the article, it states that the barrier is designed to protect against vehicle borne suicide attacks. Now I am sure it does this very well but how is it going to stop immigrants from climbing into trucks? 9ft is easily scalable by anyone vaguely athletic and with a bit of help, by anyone not particularly athletic.

Would a 9ft fence be enough to stop you if you wanted to escape from a country?

It would take more than 9ft to keep me in France smile

That wall the Italian lad had built didn't seem to do much good with the sweatys.

I imagine that non-climbable was part of the design criteria. Don't you?

It just needs the right current running through it.

Why would a barrier designed to stop vehicle borne suicide attacks have non-climable as part of the design criteria?

Why is it called an "asset"?

It sounds like someone has been watching too may spy films, and wanted to set themselves up with a dramatic phonecall where they tell someone to "deploy the asset" before hanging up.

Home Office may have said:
The Asset was designed to protect high profile locations or temporary events, such as party political conferences, from vehicle borne suicide attacks. The original design criteria did not include containment of groups of Nigerians in sports shoes, so we have increased the visibility of appropriate multi-lingual signage. We anticipate complete containment and security will be achieved once the signs have been delivered.

I can spot a design flaw here - but maybe they'll just keep the gates closed?

Maybe it was also designed to stop vest-wearing pedestrian borne suicide attacks?

This would be the fence that was setup last year;

And then fell over when it got a little windy.

What I would like to know is where all the money "promised" by the respective governments is being pissed away too....

One look at it tells me it wasn't.

What's the point? The ports are shut, so the queues are all outside!

Pointless, pathetic chest beating.

There is nowhere near enough being done to stop the vermin at Calais.

Vermin? I can understand that people don't want them over here, I also understand that their activities are illegal, but they are still people - just like you and me.

Efforts need to be spent at the source. The traffickers should also be part of the target. Perhaps they are but we do not get told.

Well said, I'm fairly sure if the shoe were on the other foot most people would do the same....
