Hi All,

I thought I'd share a few pics and what not of my recently acquired E38 735i in Glacier Green.

It's a 735i Auto. For some, fairly run of the mill. For me, it's special in two ways. Firstly, It was my Grandpas' car from new. So the sentimental value is huge, he's still ticking by thankfully but at gone 90 years of age, he's finally admitted that driving isn't the most sensible of ideas. In his words, he's falling apart and will be dead shortly. Thanks Grandpa.

I figure, this car will keep going longer than he will, I'd like to keep it going for him really. I know it's what he'd do. I'm pleased we still have some time together. I must admit, I felt bad collecting it, there was most certainly a tear in his eye, cars and driving is definitely a passion for him, one that I am sure we can all relate to.

Secondly, and more positively, it's my first V8 biggrin

I'm a couple of months into ownership, and it's an unbelievable car. So quiet and smooth. The level of comfort compared to my daily drive (impreza) is at another level. Sure, it's not the biggest engine in the range, but a 3.5 V8 is plenty enough I think, my name isn't Mr Esso BP McShell.

The car itself has the odd small dent here and there, I imagine Grandpas' spacial awareness has gone. So they'll be ironed out. A few bits of surface rust on the arches, but again, that can be sorted.

The engine is a peach. 63K on the clock. Full service history with BMW and all the paperwork from new, including it's invoice and options list. I'm a geek about such things biggrin Slight tangent: Car, K554HWT was part ex'ed against this E38, anyone know of its whereabouts?

Anyhoo, enough rambling, some pics (warning, there's quite a few):

If you've made it this far, then cheers.

Future plans for the car involve mainly keeping it standard, serviced and well looked after. I've added some G-funk 19'' rims. Obviously. In fairness, the standard wheel and tyre arrangement didn't really work for me. Far too boat like. The key is, it's reversible, I don't intend on making any permanent changes to the standard specification. Also, the standard wheels are in perfect condition, so they're now stored away.

I'll get the small niggles sorted and to be honest, it'll be a pretty damn perfect car. I'll still have it in 30 years (assuming I'm still alive) so who knows what will happen to the value. Sod all knowing my luck.

To say I love this car and of course, the man himself, is an understatement. Thanks Grandpa.

Thanks for reading.

What a wonderful thing to be able to do. I bet it's helped him knowing it's in safe hands smile

It is. It's nice being able to do it this way round, rather than try to find it years later and it turn up as a complete heap.

cheers mate smile

Agree car is nice, but those wheels do not suit it. A set of Parallels would do the trick.

Nice car (bit biased) and a nice story behind it too. Not too sure on the wheels if you want a bit of a upgrade to go for some slightly bigger oem wheels, will keep the oem look without looking OTT

cool grandpa. so much better than the cars most older folks choose. I'm sure he'll appreciate you looking after it for him.

I remember when my grandpa gave up his 1970 Daimler for a Vanden Plas (allegro) in about 1980. Sad day for him and for me as I used to enjoy our little trips out together in the Daimler.

It's a phone biggrin
90s Motorola

I don't mind the wheels myself. I was tempted with M Paralells but everyone has those, so started looking into AC Schnitzer designs. These wheels are a copy but a little less blingy than the official ACs.

Thanks all for your comments.

What a nice thing to have. Looks in lovely condition.

Your wheels are awful however. Each to their own, but I'd leave the standard ones on or go for parallels - everyone has them for a reason; they look good!

What a lovely old car with wonderful back-story. I'm not a fan of the wheels either, but they the most easily reversible thing you can di to a car! Keep the old wheels though - you may eventually prefer them.

Great story, but respect your Granda and put the right wheels back on it, he'll be for an early grave if he sees those Halfords things you've stuck on!

lovely car, I have had a couple of E39s and now have an F01 7 series,

Also have a spare set of parallel wheels in the garage taking up space, few little blemishes but still very presentable and the tyres have only done about 1000 miles. They are just in the way now, id let them go for a reasonable price, PM me if you are interested.

I used to install phones for a living, that brings back some memories. You have to keep that in there - what a timeless addition to the old girl!

Nice car, enjoy it.

My dad had a phone like that in his E36. That was at a time when he still had a carphone and a mobile phone.

I had one of those. Wonderful cars. The front brakes are 4 pot ones that have a habit of seizing or needing new seals. The biggest issue with a E38 v8 is that no matter what you replace it with, it will always feel like a downgrade. Enjoy it in good health!
