Right,

This is an undeniably maudlin topic primarily precipitated by the fact I'm unlikely to sleep for a while yet due to the excellent thermal insulation of my flat, and from listening to some favourites on Spotify. I'm also off on a massive trip in August and if I end up meeting an untimely end I'd hate to leave my funeral playlist unwritten...

My sole experiences of death (other than in a professional sense) are my gran's cremation and a friend from school who succumbed to Cystic Fibrosis and asked for the Massive Attack track which consists of largely breathing as we walked out, which was massively tearjerking. Breathe easy now, Tom.

None of these are particularly anthemic, but I like them. In order of the ceremony:

This is a Low, Blur. I love it. It's floaty and a bit lovely. It's reminiscent of being in a plane leaving the UK for places unknown. Walking in music. This is a low, but it won't hurt you.

You Do Something to Me, Paul Weller. Well. I've got to have something for people to cry to, haven't i?

Rhythm and Blues Alibi, Gomez: Just because. Possibly after a witty anecdote. I can never get enough of their singer's bark, and he's just as good live.

Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, Ryuchi Sakamoto: an iconic tube which reminds me of Japan. Suitable for the bit when the coffin disappears.

I'd like to have Weather Storm by Craig Armstrong playing as people file out.

And for comedy value 'suicide is painless' by the Manics or 'Forget about me' by Simple Minds would probably work.

Am I bonkers? Anyone else have a list?

When my mother died a couple of years ago she'd already chosen her funeral music.

Robert Plant/Alison Kraus - Your Long Journey
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eG_rArV84iY
Van Morrison - Have I Told You Lately
Fleetwood Mac - Songbird.

Her coffin was carried out of the hall to the music of Dropkick Murphys' Amazing Grace. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ip-COzs42LQ

Very difficult to listen to these, still, as I think of that day whenever I hear them. It did make me think of my own mortality though, and wonder what I'd want playing at my funeral. The problem is, I change my mind quite often. The only ones I've ever stuck with is George Harrison's My Sweet Lord, and Elgar's Nimrod.

I told my wife, half-jokingly, that I want Iggy Pop's 'Lust For Life'.

Alternatively, something by Whitney Houston or Robbie Williams or Beyonce or Gary Barlow. If I'm not having fun, then no-one's having fun...

At my dad's funeral we had Vaughan Williams "Lark Ascending" playing as the coffin was brought in. In one of those lovely coincidences, the music reached a crescendo just as his coffin was placed down.

We left to "The Trail Of The Lonesome Pine" by Laurel and Hardy. Dad loved L&H and, rather than the predictable "Always look on the bright side of life" et al, we thought it was a great song to smile to after a somewhat sad 20 minutes or so.

I personally would like to be carried in to Beethoven's 7th symphony 1st movement. Just because it's pretty much my favourite piece. That or Ave Maria by Schubert - the Cecilia Bartoli version.

Just to really sock it to my kids, I'd probably have "Dance with my father again" by Luther Vandross and "Cat in the cradle" by Harry Chapin.

In the middle I'd like an extended version of "Body Talk" by Imagination and FORCE everyone to grind their hips to it in its entirety for fear of receiving my eternal ethereal wrath.

I think I'd like Lonesome pine for my exit music too. You know, start a tradition. Or perhaps the theme tune to Pot Black.

At 32 years old, back in 2005, I did my will. And thinking ahead, I decided to specify a song for when my coffin rolls away.

I wrote on my will 'Fairwell to the Fairground' by the White Lies:

And 10 years later, I am still happy that I made the right choice! biggrin

Mine will be a humanist do and I have said to my daughter that I will start off with Comfortably Numb-Pink Floyd then you can all moan about me,stop in the middle for Bat out of hell-Meatloaf then have 10 minutes of what a damn fine chap I was and finally Highway to Hell- AC/DC. Always up for a laugh and don't see why my funeral should be any different.

I asked this question a few weeks ago, "What song should I play at my funeral?". My younger daughter (12) in a blink of an eye said "I Am Dust". biggrin

My late wife had

Run - Amy McDonald - how she felt about her illness and us
Nimrod - Elgar - her favourite music she played on the organ at Oxford (Keble)
Chasing cars - snow patrol - how she felt at the end
Song for guy - elton John - how she wanted to people to feel

All now desperately sad for me

Mike
