We're off to France in 3 weeks.

I've been watching the Euro carefully and I'm wondering if I should buy whilst I can get around €1.39 to the pound, or wait a week and see if the Greek mess will get me more bang for my buck?

Anyone with some educated guesses?!

How much are you changing?

A 1 cent move in the price equates to £3 saved on £300.....

Why not change £500 now and £500 when you get there.

I'm going to France in August. About a month ago I bought £1,000 worth of Euros at about 1.375, which felt like a good deal compared with the Swiss Francs I bought in February!

No idea what will happen in the next few weeks with the Euro. Probably won't make a huge difference either way but it might be worth splitting the purchase as others have suggested - buy half now and half nearer the time.

I'm going to France in a few weeks, i'll mostly be using cash machines.

Why would anyone want to take a grand in cash?
Well let's see now......

In France I'll have to pay 2/3% transaction fee.... Get the bank rate on withdrawals....

Change this side and bring with me. Today I could easily get 1.388 to the pound. And some of us just prefer cash

i've always found the rate from cash machines very reasonable.
I don't have to worry about losing wedges of cash either.

Would you walk round with that much at home?
Only if it was a couple of weeks until pay day and I was skint.........this is PH after all.biggrin

I am off to Italy and changed £1000 at 1.35 and just changed another £1000 at 1.39. To be honest it would have to be a major slide in the value of the euro to make a noticeable difference at these 'small' amounts.

If you were transferring a lump sum from a house payment or something it would be a different story!

I find overseas cash machines provide poor rates, particularly with transaction fees. I seem to get a much better deal using a debit card.

Also, I find I don't pass cash machines as often when I'm in rural France - they're there but I might have to go out of my way a bit to find one. Easier just to have a bit of cash with me all the time.

Heard of Clarity credit cards? Load before you travel..

Be interesting to see what the rate is next week.

And was heading towards 1.42 last night, so its actually cooled off a fair bit.

I could see what all the fuss was about if you were buying a house or some other large purchase, but on a grand you're talking about a tenner being saved!
