I finally got the S1 up on the lift to inspect the speedometer cable connection. It was unattached. However, when I pushed what I think is an undamaged cable through from the speedometer end, the cable just peeks out the end-what I assume is enough to catch the transmission.

My bigger issue is what connects the metal end of the cable enclosure to the transmission? The end of the enclosure appears to be larger that the piece coming out of the transmission!

Does anyone have a picture showing what this is supposed to look like. It almost seems I am missing a clip or something here to hold it together.

Still haven't figured this one out. Any ideas ... while it's up on the lift....

Got any pictures?

Don't know about the S1 (electronic speedo on my S3) but many years ago when I was "messing" with various Fords the outer cable was clamped to the gearrbox tailshaft casing with something like this..... clamp.
Failing that I'd go for a circlip?

I also recall that the inner cable with its square ends had a little nylon ring at the speedo end to determine how much pushed into the back of the speedo. This can move giving more than you need in the speedo and then not enough in the gearbox. Following so far?
It should be possible to move this back along the cable, carefully, without damaging anything.

Sometimes if an end sheared off the cable it was possible to adjust this to still give just enough "square bit" either end to catch and the speedo to work.

Can you post a picture to clarify. Mine is an S1 and I can get it onto the ramps tomorrow afternoon to check for you.

Now that I have looked under and reminded myself, there should be a circlip fitted in a female groove inside the end of the speedo drive housing. Now that I have seen it I am reminded that some years ago someone had the same problem, the circlip had come out and become lost. I also vaguely seem to remember a temporary repair with a cable tie?
I did try to photogrpah it but with the exhaust still on I couldnt get a focussed picture through the tiny space left.

Thank you. It sounds like the exhaust will need to come off completely to fix that ,,, just dropping the rear fasteners might give me sufficient access if I can raise the car high enough.

With the exhaust on, and a good torch, you should be able to see if there is evidence that a circlip is missing (it might even be hanging on the speedo cable?). But I am afraid I dont think you have a chance of doing a good job without taking the exhaust off because the chassis rail is so close.
