Here's a strange one -

I went out to my clio today leaving work and found it was running.
Had been for a while going by the heat the engine bay gave off.
It has keyless entry/ignition and is a 1.4 on an 06 plate.

The keyfob was in a drawer a hundred yards away and the door was locked.

It needs the key to be in the car, pedal depressed and start button pressed to go.

How the hell can it start on it's own...?

You didn`t switch it off when you left it, just got out and walked away, locking the doors as you went. Force of habit and easy done.
And no, I haven`t, but I have seen it done

Seems a good idea but it shouldn't run with the key removed from the car.
Plus that would mean 8 1/2 hours running!

Just tried taking the key card out whilst it was running. Surprisingly it kept going!
Even at a good distance.

The most logical conclusion so must be right.

Amazed the engine hasn't melted though!

I believe that if you take out the key card after the car has been started, the car will keep going until it's turned off. Imagine driving down a slip road and having the car suddenly stop.

It will keep running once it's started, even if you send the key to the moon, just need to press the stop button a couple of times if the car cant see the key. 8 1/2 hours is no different to 8 1/2 minutes as far as the engine is concerned, so long as the cooling and lubrication circuits are in good order.
