X type 2.2

I know it's a Ford in drag but it's got to be better than my Vectra.

Any good or to be avoided?

EGRs and clutches. Oh and clutches. Will cost £1200 for a clutch and flywheel.

Any idea how long clutches and flywheels last? What are the symptoms of a worn clutch?

If I go for it I'll make sure it comes with a warranty that covers it.

It'll slip when you floor it in high gears.

60-70k seems the point they need replacing, but some go on to do much higher mileages.

I have the Mondeo version, a 2.2 diesel ghia. Probably better specked than any of the X types. If it is high mileage, it may have had the clutch done, look for proof of receipts etc. listen for any tapping when revving, this could be anything from the EGR to a turbo issue. Listen for noises from the rear, the brakes and rear wheel bearings can be an issue on these. It should pull very well, especially in 3rd. On the Mondeo, ford played with the mapping to protect the the clutch, so 1st and 2nd gear seem a bit gutless, but some owners have had this sorted with a remap taking power from 155 to around 180bhp.
They are not the most refined engine, but if you need a diesel, it does the job, and don't worry about the ford thing, Ford are very good these days and without them, Jaguar would probably be history now.

No Mondeo is as refined as an X-type. I had my 2.2d for more than 100000 miles & it needed nothing other than some rear suspension bushes. I towed a big caravan with it as well & there were no clutch issues at all. I hope my XF is as reliable.

I don't recall mentioning the Mondeo as more refined than the X type. The X type does however suffer many of the issues, like clutches and various engine issues common on the 2.2. Although, I have driven both and both sounded typically diesel and there wasn't a lot of difference in driving them. Both good cars, but can be troublesome with age like any car.

Loved the torque in mine, great handling ('07 SP Estate) and was generally a great car.

£1,300 on a new gearbox diff (whining), and a clutch "whilst you're in there", meant I needed to cut it loose. Either that or run it into the ground for another 3 years. 77k miles and I still managed to get £6k for it 18 months ago.

No problems with wheels, other than be bloody careful, but I went through a brand new pair of low profiles in a week once. (Punctures that the rims then destroyed through running flat. I was on the motorway.)
