Twice this has occurred now, instead of filling up till the nozzle clicks off, the person in front of me has spent another half an hour making sure its brimmed right up to the neck so it's pretty much spilling out.

Is it madness or just me?

Fill till click, adjust nozzle slightly and repeat for one or two more clicks. Shake off nozzle, tried to avoid small drip landing on car, swear and wipe drip off paintwork.

On the plus side I typically do pay at pump and don't spend 3 weeks in the shop checking the date on every bar of chocolate before deciding not to bother and just buying a newspaper.

I do it occasionally when I've got a long journey ahead of me.
I wish my car had a bigger fuel tank laugh

Not just you, it's stupid as it gets left all over the road which, with diesel in particular, can be lethal.

I fill till the first click, then round it up to either 50p or the pound. Plus the obligatory penny which always slips on. biggrin

fk that, you need a degree to pay at the pump in Tesco and get a receipt frown

Nope. Fill it until it clicks, and then I'm done. Primarily because I also reset the odometer, so if I always fill it until it clicks, I can calculate the MPG.

Exceptions are as above, if making an exceptionally long journey. But even so, I doubt brimming it gives a massively enhanced range.

I do fill it until it clicks then fill it until it clicks once again. Shake the drips off and we're done.

First click is way less accurate than brimming.

I used to let it click 2-3 times but now just do it the once. I hear that some fuel can spill out of brimming too much, so essentially wasting money?

In the U.S. you don't even need to hold the pump, just stick it in, clip the handle wide open and go for a wonder till finished.

I let the nozzle click a few times to make sure. First click, I'll look at the figure and see if it's reasonable. If it's a bit short of what I'm expecting, I give it a few seconds and resume filling up. If it's about right, I read the figures and spend ten seconds reading the little tickers to re-convince myself unleaded is still (just) winning over diesel. Those few seconds let the tank settle so I can get one or two more clicks in - that'll do me.

In the grand scheme of things it isn't going to make much difference.

Then it will really twist your melon when I tell you that I put the fuel in at one pump but got the receipt out of a different pump because mine had ran out wink

My old Volvo could take nearly another 10 litres between the first click and it being properly full, but it would take ages because diesel foams up so bloody much.

I don't brim, but I do wiggle the pipe to get the dregs so they don't drink down my car...

on VW group cars there is the 'trick' to vent the tank and squeeze another 6/7 litres in after the pump clicks off.

With practice this probably takes another 30secs and no fuel should be spilling out. That extra 30 secs gets me about another 60-70 miles per tank so definitely worth doing.
