Hi guys: My GTR suffered a starter ring gear failure of 3 teeth. I took the assembly apart and took pictures in the process. Now I am reassembling and I see something that confuses me, (not that it takes much) The ring gear as I received it from the factory was mounted with the small step towards the engine. Now I am questioning this orientation because it looks as if the step would clear the outside of the flywheel and allow the ring gear to be closer to the clutch and starter. Any help? Lee

I don't know, if your setup matches mine, but if you have anything close to a SBC with a G64/20 transmission, this might help:

This is an image of my old ring gear, when I took it off for replacement. The flat surface on the back of the ring gear faces the clutch. I also was not sure if it was mounted correctly in that position. However, the other way around it would not fit properly, so I put the new one in facing the same direction and it works fine.

Does your new ring gear have chamfers on the teeth?
If it does, and just on one side, then that is the side that meets first with the starter pinion.

I think you need to be more specific with your set up. Some G50 set ups have ring gear on the flywheel, some on the clutch cover plate and some have the starter on the gearbox and others on the engine side of the adapter plate..... the answer will be different in all of these circumstances!
