So I'm looking to get back into PC gaming. Mainly thanks to the new incarnation of Elite which I've played and enjoyed but is caning my current PC even on lowest settings.

I'm looking at a budget of max £1000 just for the box. Had been looking at trying to get something with a 4gb Gtx 970 card in it but I have seen that equivalent specced machines with a R9 290x in it for less money. Does anyone on here use the R9? Is it any good? I'm also going to be playing GTAV and looking for something that might be able to play the new Battlefront when that's released.

Good reviews for the R9 on Toms http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/gaming-graphics-card...

Here is the lastest build for $1600 so £1100ish but will give you ideas! Havent looked at the uk prices for the items in uk!

I would go for one of those design you own build PC companies like www pcspecialist or cyberpower.

The R9 3xx's are out now. Pretty much a similar card with a few tweaks and in some cases, less power usage.

I've just upgraded my PC from a R7 250 to a 4gb R9 380. I've only played Bioshock Infinite on it so far and it's running that at 60fps at 1080. Looking to get some more games soon so will have a better idea of how it runs then.

I've just upgraded to a GTX 970 myself, and went for the Zotac 970. It comes in at around £250 but so far so good, it's been running GTA on very high settings at between 45-70 FPS at 1080p and it keeping cool.

Worth a look.

£996. Complete system.

You should be able to play any game on high settings at up to 2560x1440 on that rig.

You could even save yourself some on a cheaper case for example.

Don't rule out second hand parts.I get most of mine from places like the Overclockers forum, Gumtree and the AV forums.I picked up two mint, boxed, gtx 970's to run in Sli from Gumtree which included the receipt for £340 for the pair!

I would say the best value for money card at the moment is the GTX 970.

Looks like 970 is the way forward. Been offered an i5 rig, recently built up including a 970 for £850 which seems fair.

Looks pretty decent.

Heres one place: https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/reviews/

The review section is where you find the best deals really. If you go back to Novembers last year there is a tower for £999 with the unlocked cpu and overclocked, more ram (not fully necessary), smaller ssd but larger PSU for the future also a water cooler.

Much of a muchness but I'd be taking the free warranty and parts from a company over a secondhand unit personally. thumbup

^ this is a good spec. The only thing I would add is a mechanical HDD for extra storage and note that 650W is probably a bit touch and go for SLI if you were to drop another 970 in later (would recommend 800W).

Sorry to jump in like this. However, the RM650 isn't a great PSU for that money. It's made by CWT, has had multiple recalls over the past few years and is nothing special. Just because it is Corsair, this does not guarantee you quality.

Corsair used to be a byword for quality PSUs, often made by Seasonic. Now it is just a PSU reseller who overprices and overhypes their mediocre units.

Better choices are any XFX (TS, XTR for example), Antec HCG/HCP, EVGA G2/P2/GS, any SuperFlower and so on.

Why you would get an ITX 970 also, I don't know?

Anyone got any opinions about this that I've just seen:

http://www.box.co.uk/Cube_SPECIAL_i5_3.2GHz_8GB_12...1TB1779393.html

Keen price, I understand the PSU could be beefier, but I've got no real desire to go down the route of sli. Just want a half decent box like that runs Elite Dangerous nicely and will also handle GTA V

It looks like a solid build for the price, the only thing I think you should think about are the fact it's in a micro ATX case, which means it's pretty small and pretty cramped in there. If you are ever going to upgrade anything you might want a bigger case but as I said it looks very solid for the price.

What I would do is get a list of parts at Overclockers UK - they will then build that (providing it is all compatible) for around £60. That way you get what you want and at an ok price.
