Pinking - Bad Petrol

OK, just filled up with Optimax, 3 miles down the road it starts pinking like crazy and tick-over goes haywire... could this be just normal unleaded being sold as Optimax... and can I do anything about this i.e. will octane boost help for this tank full, or if I take it easy (???) will I avoid damage..
