Hi guys

I've not long since agreed to have my eyes lasered, something I've been thinking about it for years. Anyway, I'm getting the surgery in the morning, and will be home around lunchtime. I'm fully expecting, from what I've read, that other than putting drops in, I should not expect to open my eyes too much for the next 8 - 10 hours until bedtime. Least of all be expecting to watch TV, or use a computer.

So, 8 hours, lying still, noting to do. Has anyone got any recommendations on something to listen to? I'm not massively into music, so don't have 8 hours of tunes to fall back on, I'd like to educate myself during this 8 hours, or at least listen to something interesting.

So, what can I lay back and listen to for 8 hours that'll help the time disappear. Any great audio books out there etc? I will have the wife around to change files over if needed etc.

They are doing both eyes at the same time? Do you not have the option to have one done, then the other a few days later?

If you're not into music it makes it hard to recommend stuff, so why not look at NME's 500 greatest albums of all time and pick a few? http://www.nme.com/photos/the-500-greatest-albums-...

I don't do audiobooks but I love podcasts. Do you like history? Dan Carlings Hardcore History podcasts are really long and in-depth. Lots of other great podcasts to choose from, depending on your tastes.
e.g. Kermode and Mayo's Film Review, or This American Life, or Radio 4's The Moral Maze, or Freakonomics, or ...
or humorous ones, like The Bugle or The Doug Stanhope Podcast.
There are hundreds of ones to choose from.

Personally though, I'd have a few beers and then sleep for the 8+ hours

The Martian is an excellent audiobook, a bit science heavy but a great story and well narrated, pretty humorous in places as well.

Sleep would be the best plan if you can manage it!

They told me I would have gritty eyes as if someone had been cutting onions near me, it was more like someone had squirted liquidised onions into my eyes! Listening to anything was the last thing on my mind.

Having said that, the irritation only lasted a few hours and I wish Id made the decision to get it done years ago!

Ricky Gervais Show from audible.com

First season is 6.5 hours, Season 2 and 3 are 3 hours.

Worth every penny.

Wagner's "Ring des Nibelungen" comes in at between 8 and ten hours, that'll see you right.

Podcasts are good, I quite like the ones by Skeptoid (someone on here put me on to it!) - very good conspiracy podcasts, each one is about 10-15mins long

I can't comment on lasard as it's a 15 second thing and never had this done myself but I have had 2 cataracts removed last year. And they would not do both less than 1 month between.

But lasard I'm unsure of but would have thought it was daft to get both done at the same time. Even if you re only out of it for 8-10 hours.

Dawkins narrating The God Delusion may be good for a few hours.

But you may have to fight the urge to open your eyes, run into the street and scream 'stop the madness!!!!!!' at no-one in particular......

WTF?!

I read the OP, and was scrolling down to hit 'reply' and suggest this.

OP, I second this suggestion, worth an hour and a bit of your time. It's not background music, it's something to concentrate on, really listen to.
I watched the live action version of this at the O2 a number of months back. Recommended if you haven't seen it already (less applicable for the temporarily visually impaired OP).

A bit subjective I guess but I regularly listen to audio books when doing long drives.

I have always enjoyed listening to the Journey Into Space series. A bit old now (made in the 50s) but still a great listen.
It also has the notable achievement of being the last time that a radio show achieved a higher rating than its TV opponent.

Staying with a similar theme Earthsearch is a good series.

If you like some comedy then Hitch Hikers Guide To The Galaxy is pretty good too.
