My Celica went to my local Toyota dealership for maintenence (the secondary air pump was needing replaced). Toyota's quote for the job was a head-shattering £1,800!

Labour for the job was quoted as 2-3 hours, so roughly £150. So they were asking £1,650 for the cost of the air pump. bks to that I said, I'll source one myself and send it to you for fitting. I found a good condition second-hand one online, for £80. Less than 1/20th of what Toyota were going to charge me.

Anyone else experienced any ridiculous prices from dealers for replacement parts?

Centre box for a (you guessed it) Toyota.. Land cruiser Colorado V6 - centre box in mild steel - £600!
Couldn't find a pattern one so cut down and welded a new pattern diesel version (front pipe was different) - £60 including the welding work!

It would be quite amusing to price up the cost of building, say, a Ford Focus from parts sourced entirely from Uncle Henry's Parts Department - at 'retail' of course!

I was quoted £7500 for a new roof for an XKR convertible from a Jaguar Main dealer.
I fixed it with 2 bolts and 4 nuts from B&Q.
Max cost £2

Clio Trophy? That's why they handle so well - very good dampers and I believe they were an option when the car was new. It's still an awful lot though!

I'm trying to source some anti-squeal shims for my WRX as the new brake pads didn't come with them and the old ones disintegrated when I tried to swap them. £54 from Subaru. The brake pads only cost £30!

Not an option - standard on the Trophy. But according to this dealer, not covered by the warranty for some reason.

Anyway, I had them refurbished for a few hundred quid instead.

Sorry, I meant to say that they were an option on the standard hot Clio (182,200 or whichever it was).

A small saucer sized piece of clip-in plastic surround for the driving lights on a Mitsubishi L200 Warrior, when I was in Perth. Must be about 15p to make, tops.

"AUD$160+vat and it will have to come from Sydney as we don't stock those, so will take about two weeks."

Say wha?
