One of the headlamps on my Chrysler 300C started flickering. The bint at the parts department of my local Chrysler dealer said I needed a new off-side headlamp unit - cost $2800 + tax.

Bought a new ballast from Allpar for $60.

Job was a good'un.

VW Taureg center driveshaft $1800. My car is on its 3rd!
That's an unusual part to go and especially to fail repeatedly - tell us more?
The propshaft centre bearing on the Touareg/Cayenne is prone to early failure. It's a standard GKN part. I paid £145 to have a new bearing supplied and fitted to my prop that I removed and refitted myself. Changing the whole propshaft is madness.
That makes a lot more sense now - I couldn't work out how a propshaft could keep going!
On a 4x4 that's subjected to all manner of mud and water it's not an uncommon failure (I had a front prop fly apart on the M6 on my Defender - that was exciting...). Touaregs and Cayennes are prone to centre bearing failure even when just used on the road.
Ah, thanks. I know next to nothing about 4x4s (bizarrely I was recently hounded on a thread for not knowing what an Evoque was - people accused me of lieing because apparently "everyone's heard of them"!).
As other have said there is a carrier baring in the middle that is made from cheese. My first lasted 45,000, the second 3000! Never been offroad or towed anything in its life. VW don't sell the parts they make you buy the whole prop shaft. You can of course have it taken apart by a decent driveshaft shop, rebuilt and rebalanced, if there are any where you live (there arn't on the island my car lives). But take it to a VW dealer you better be prepared to bend over.

I can recommend Bailey Morris for propshaft work and they do mail order as well.
They provided the replacement front prop for the Defender and after chewing one per year of cheap ones its been on for over 4 years with no issues at all.

Appreciate the recomendation but I think I'm just going to leave the car on the beach this hurricane season and hope it gets swept out to sea.

My rear dampers for my Alfa (Mito Cloverleaf) come in at around £600 each...so not as bad a Clio Trophy ones, but still!
I wonder if there are aftermarket normal (non electric controlled) dampers which would be better performing, or more reliable? Obviously you would lose the in cabin adjustability, but not a huge deal.

It would be quite amusing to price up the cost of building, say, a Ford Focus from parts sourced entirely from Uncle Henry's Parts Department - at 'retail' of course!
For a laugh we once priced up a replacement mk2 Focus RS engine bought as spares. We stopped at £15k...

the silver grille or 'mouth' on a MK5 r32 from the dealer is... £527 inc vat. This is just the silver central large grille ( no R32 badge either!_) and doesn't include the bumper itself...absolutely mental.

VW cracked mine, but because it was cracked already wouldn't take liability which was fair enough - so they said I could have it at cost price which was £360, retail being £527. thought he was pulling my pants down so I called another dealer ( Swansea) and the rates were identical.

I declined and got offered money off my next service which will do me better.

Anything for a Clio V6 from a dealer.

Front discs about £800 iirc, any panel was thousands if they could get hold of one.

They even discontinued the sodding paint pens in the most common V6 blue

My RX8 failed it's mot on a missing seat button which had fallen into the footwell. A new one from Mazda is £80! Cheap piece of plastic that on anything else would be less than a quid.

Replacement engine for Lotus Carlton in 1993

£9999.99

it was a bargain biggrin

At the time the Vauxhall pricing on the parts system could only cope with 6 digits - actual price was several thousand quid more

It went POA after a few went apparently

Only one that really made me say sheesh was my BMW 740i Gearshift Knob in wood cracked on a really hot day and became really nasty to use so I asked BMW for replacement cost

The faux wood version was three times the price of the black leather version - I bought the leather one biggrin

Recently took my R8 to Audi for a 'bigish' service and was quoted £1366. I asked if i could supply my own parts to which they said no problem. I supplied my own oil and spark plugs and this brought the bill down to £942.

So thats £424 for 10 litres of oil and 8 spark plugs for which i got for about £170.

I was quoted £160 once to replace the headlight washer on my old Porsche 911. I was a little confused, since the washer worked but would dribble a bit of screenwash as opposed to the drowning effect the other washer produced, so I went to a specialist.

They charged me £5 to remove and replace a small rubber pipe between the motor and the nozzle that had cracked in the car's 6 years on the road.

M10 bolts that hold the exhaust manifold to the turbo on a 1.8T Audi A6 - they were something stupid like £7.80 each for a standard 10.8 tensile bolt of a length you can buy off the shelf pretty much anywhere for about 50p

Even the parts guy at the dealer recommended just going to a DIY/tool/fastener shop
