There's the problem.

Spent 4 years in Manchester as a student. Was quite happy to escape with all body parts still attached.....

It's nothing to do with people thinking your car is "flash", it's the fact your car is relatively small and low down, I've found this when driving these type of cars, and like you I was a bit paranoid for a while, then I realised that most the time they ain't paying much attention and they only subconsciously see you.

Hire a pick up for the day and see the difference!

There are a lot of idiot drivers on the road. I'm not normally an aggressive driver, but I won't let anyone bully me on the road, no matter what car they're in. I drive a mint Audi S4 so obviously don't want to crash it just to prove a point, but if someone drives like a knob I won't back down.

This morning on the motorway I had a Merc(minicab) sit on my arse for a few miles, even though there was nowhere for him to go.
Eventually he undertakes me and tries to push in between me and the car in front. By which time I had closed the gap and squeezed him out. He nearly collided with me through his erratic driving and obviously took great offense. From then on he was taunting me the whole way cutting me up, breaking hard in front of me and holding me up. I didn't make a fuss and waited until I was next to him, so wound my window down and told him to pull over. Guess what, he gave it all the signs and verbal abuse but wouldn't pull over so we could sort it out...

Something I did notice on my 370Z is the rear view mirror seems to magnify your rear view slightly, such that a car that's following at a reasonable distance actually looks like it's tailgating you. Try it with a friend - sit in your car and ask him to roll up behind the Z and flash your brake lights when you think he's too close. The actual distance isn't that unreasonable. The first few times I drove my 370Z I remember thinking exactly the same thing - "why's every prick tailgating me?" They're not - your mirror's fooling you.

Today, and only today Red Lights seem to be optional. 3 people I have seen fly through, not just red lights, but long gone red lights today. Bizarre/

I'd always wondered for whom those helpful stickers on mirrors - "Objects in the Rear View Mirror May Appear Closer than They Are" - were intended.

Sporty cars bring out the worst in people, blue Megane F1 and White 197 Cup used to attract idiots everywhere.

335d and current 550i people used to get some tailgaters (no more than any other car) but soon back off.

Good advice, interestingly my USA spec car has the warning stickers on the mirror class but my Euro spec car doesn't.

I find a lot of coupés suffer due to the shape of the rear window/glass and the height of the window which makes it harder to see all of the car behind you.

OP: do you find yourself stressing at night because cars can get close enough that their headlights vanish from your REAR view mirror but blind you when you look in the wing mirrors?

Yes. Try driving a Porsche sportscar and you'll find that for some reason the minds of other motorists seem to dissolve into a puddle of inadequacy. Here's my "top 3" for you,

1. White van man [note he keeps the window open for shouting obscenities and gesticulating with one finger]
2. Large black 4x4 [vehicle size appears to reflect inverse relationship with genitals]
3. Audi diesel [Oh dear]
I hear you regarding modern Porsches. However I had a 964 which everyone seemed to love (including a van driver who wanted to know all about it when we were stuck next to each other in a jam) and no one in the rush hour knows what my 968 is so they ignore it.

But people waving their willies when they see you in a newish porsche and beating their chests (predominantly blokes). Yup. Been on the receiving end of that.

Easy, the mass of people perceive anything that is not a hatchback, SUV or people carrier as unusual, and therefore "flashy" so think you're an arrogant, rich tosspot and drive in a hostile manner to express their feelings of inadequacy.

I know the feeling.Mrs has a red corsa vxr which everyone seems to like the back off,as you say it seems everyone wants to have a race, especially anything brand new and 30k +.Don't think people like it when they have spent quite a bit of money on a new car whether hired or bought, and they can't keep up with a 6k corsa.

I posted on another thread of my experiences in a friends M235i.

The amount of aggressive driving, goading and people trying to race us was just crazy. And forget about being let out of a junction in a car like thatfrown

I had no such problems with my old sheddy Golf and the current Saab daily, bar the occasional muppet we all encounter.

Guess I used to do that 45 year ago too but I have noticed of late that rather than the young lad or man in a suit, it is the young girl that sits right behind me to the point that sometimes I cannot see much more of the car than part of the windscreen

Tailgating is an age old discussion on car forums.

Personally, if I have somebody who is driving what I deem to be too close to me I always like to set the standard really early. It's so, so simple. I just maintain the speed I'm doing. I will never, ever speed up.

The vast majority of tail-gaters realise that I'm not going to be bullied so back off, the one's who don't can just sit behind me getting angrier and angrier whilst I ignore them and get on with my life.

Instead of doing an emergency stop or flashing your break lights just maintain your speed.

tbh you sound like a nightmare on the road

if he can undertake you, you can pull over

I saw a 118d tailgating an Audi R8 the other evening. Not even busy on the road. Tried to undertake him and was driving like a prat.

Me, I try to just let them go now. Unless it's busy on the road and I can't. The mini I have barely any issues with, the ST attracts the usual 1.2 corsa gang and those that ask me "is it fast mate" to which I reply "no" every time.
