Which areas are the good areas to live in greater manchester.

My new job is near M14 postcode. We will be moving back with two kids under age 8.

We used to live in prestwich and like to move back there but can't find any 3 bed property within our budget (£850 pcm). Looking for property near good schools and local amenities.

I'm M14. In general it's not where I would choose to live, but there are a few little pockets of nice more family friendly areas, particularly towards Withington/Chorlton.
I don't know North Manchester that well, further south near Altrincham has some amazing schools but is much more expensive.
Depends how close you want to be, some more villagy places outside of the M60.

Bury is nice closer towards ramsbottom. The town center is nice too but there's some bits which are a bit questionable looking

+1 That's where I'd be looking.

Travel out south on the A34

Past Parrs Wood..then your into Cheadle, Heald Green, Handforth and Wilmslow.

Lots of families, kids, sensible properties, decedent schools, shops etc

A34 is not a bad route in and out of Manchester.

Traffic is a nightmare. I used to live just off Oxford Rd.
I would also think about schools. How old are the kids?
There are very few decent schools in Manchester.

Any where in south Warrington. Stockton heath would be my choice, great village, great pubs, lots of choice for places to eat and some really good schools. About 30 to 40 mins travel but well worth it.

Have a look around Rossendale, lovely countryside (Some of the finest in the North West), yet only 30/40 minutes from Manchester via the M66. (Car or X43 bus)

Bury is OK, (I have had a business there over 40 years), but there are some areas best to avoid.....

£850pm would get you a decent place around Rawtenstall/Helmshore.

Cheadle here

Tram from East Didsbury is handy for getting into Manc centre if you don't fancy the drive.

Hm. Toughie.
Are you local previously? Do you have friends / family in the area?
M14 is a bit of an odd place to work so I will guess Uni or Hospital?
Schools can be very hit and miss.

Wilmslow is a good shout. A34 can get busy.
Altrincham is alright although avoid the east side very close to Wythenshawe.

Prestwich is ok for schools. But be warned they are very popular and you will have to be well inside the catchment areas etc for Monicas. Philips High is alright too. Traffic will be murder.

We have been actively trying to buy a house in Culcheth for the last 6 months. Fast becoming a very popular area. No idea what rents are like though. Prices are climbing fast. Might be a bit far though.

Burnage / Reddish might be ok for you.

Traffic to m14 would be interesting in rush hour - might be worth following the train lines from mauldeth rd (or wherevers near your work) outwards to see where you end up. Wilmslow/Alderley edge won't be doable on your budget, cheadle may be ok.
I don't know but I'm guessing m14 schools aren't going to be great - you need to get out of the m60 ring before things get greener, cheaper, better imho.
I'm Marple bridge area - outstanding primary school and 25 mins train into the city centre. Murder driving in in rush hour though - eg didsbury would be close to 45 mins on bad days. Somewhere along the a34 dual carriageway is a good shout, subject to budget, if you are considering driving in.

Indeed. I was living in M14 and working close to the airport 15 years ago and that was bad enough (going other direction to everyone else) and still took c.30 min.

Current commute is 3 and a bit miles and takes c.30 min most days by car. Bike is just under 10 mins.

The councils in Manchester have had it in for the car driver since they lost the congestion charge vote.

The latest one is that Oxford Road is going bus only...

And of course we have all seen the crazy A6/A580 developments.

I live in M20 and takes me just under 20 minutes to get to M1/university. In the evenings it takes me circa 15 mins to get home - this is mainly through some of the rat runs.

Obviously a bit longer if any major football games are on and all the idiots come out to play.

I would be looking at south manchester - but i am biased.

How long would it take to travel to M14 7HR from prestwich in traffic?

Stretford has good schools, is it good area to live?
