Half way through this book:

What a bloody good story it is. Everybody has heard of the Jesse Owens but not so many the story of the US 8 crew who took gold that year. I rowed for years and was totally unaware of this tale.

Even if you're not into rowing, it's a good insight into the history of the run up to and the event itself.

Nice quote from George Yeomans Pocock in the book on that topic:

It’s not a question of whether you will hurt, or of how much you will hurt; it’s a question of what you will do, and how well you will do it, while pain has her wanton way with you.

Bought this for my 17 year old son as he refuses to read but is absolutely committed to rowing (was a Henley entrant this year cool).

He still refuses to read.
rolleyes

And 5 days training a week? He does 19 sessions of training/fitness a week if you including cycling the 17km to and from the club.

BTW I lived on a boat for 16 years... rowing was one of my hobbies in a 13ft clinker skiff (heavy bugger) needed some decent sweeps to get her going

TBH It's not a book for a 17 Y/O. Buy him Steve Redgrave's autobiog. Lots of training tips in it so it will get him to read by stealth.
