I'm thinking of having a go at either the short or standard Mega Meon in a couple of weeks.

I've done several charity rides of 30-50 miles, so I'm not really worried about the distance, especially as much of the route is around my stomping ground.

However, this would be my first proper/timed event.

My question is - Am I gonna look like a prize plonker participating on my trusty commuter hybrid amongst a sea of shiny road bikes?!

Most people will be on road bikes, but I wouldn't let that stop you entering, if you think you can get round it OK on your current bike. Sportives aren't races after all..

Just go for it and enjoy the experience. Don't worry about what you ride.

I did the Wiggle Chiltern Classic a couple of months ago, saw a fair few on hybrids, some mountain bikes even. Very well run event, loads of food available and drinks at the stops. Go for it, if you are going to do a big ride an event like this is the best way with all the support.

Good for you for signing up!

It's NOT about the bike, in the end.

I have a lightweight, spangly new, carbon fibre 22-speed road bike. My brother has a heavy aluminium, commuter-orientated, 10-speed bike with mudguards, etc. Recently I rode his commute route with him, and he wiped the floor with me. Go out and enjoy it. Who knows? Maybe you'll take the scalps of a few "all the gear, no idea" types on expensive machinery while you're soaking up the atmosphere... wink

I did the Wiggle Magnificat at the weekend. Really well run event IMO. Anyhow bikes wise i'd say 95% were on normal geared road bikes, but it was everything from old steel Peugeot bikes to Pinarello Dogma F8s with everything in between. However there were also quite a few cyclocross bikes, various mountain bikes, hybrids, a single speed road bike and two tandems. Huge range of abilities too.

Thanks for the replies.

Thankfully the weather on Saturday was fantastic for the event, 24 hours either way and the ride would have been miserable - if it went ahead!

Whilst I'm under no illusion that I was particularly quick (I achieved the 'bronze' award) it was a great experience.

I thoroughly enjoyed the event and will definitely be doing it again next year - maybe I'll go for the standard distance or try the short route again but aim to achieve the 'silver' award.

Have to agree, the weather was great if a little windy, this made the outward 70 miles hard but homeward 30 miles were much more pleasent, Managed 5.36 on the 100, so pretty happy for a vetran

Was a good event as, as you say, we were lucky with the weather!

I also did the standard course and got a riding time of 4:32, although we lost 30-35mins as my friend suffered a puncture.....went to change the tube, started pumping it up to find the new tube valve was faulty, so we had to change it again! we stopped twice for about 5-10mins each time and got 5:15 overall.

Raised £7k for charity in doing it biggrin

Will definitely do it again next year, probably try the epic again (did it 2 years ago)

Glad you enjoyed it as well.

Glad you guys had a good ride, I didn't attend as concussed from my exploits at bike park wales on the Wednesday.
