Hi I'm thinking of changing cars and I've narrowed my short list down to a 2 year old M5 a New M3 and a 12/18 month old Audi RS4. I was just wanting to hear from people that have owned any of the above cars and which one you think will retain most value over 3 years of ownership? Thanks

The RS4 would be an estate....

If you're contemplating a new M3 I'd also suggest crunching the figures on a new M5 vs 2 yeaer old - there's not much of a difference in costs when you consider the heavier discounts, well equipped standard spec and the availability of 0% finance for the 5.

It's an absolutely blinding machine.

Exactly what the boss says. I think the cash price on a new M5 should be £60K and they seem to be very good on M6's as I have seen new recently for £70K

I've currently got a Range Rover sport and have had m3's in the past I've got about £25k of my own cash in the sport at the min. I know I'm going to lose money I'm just trying to minimise my loss over 3 years of ownership!! I think I'd prefer an M5 over an m3 if I'm honest but I've always liked the RS4's too.

Outside of town - where the gearbox is little short of hopeless - I think the F10 M5 is almost impossible to fault (except that you have to turn the auto wipers on when you want them - which isn't very auto...). Value in 2 years? Make sure you have a GFV. ;-)

Really? The only very minor issue that I've had is that, in the lowest Auto setting, it defaults to 2nd gear when stuck in traffic for more than a couple of minutes.

That's my only slight gripe as well, apart from that the GB is brill....? Allbeit in an M6 variant.

I find this comment very odd indeed.

The DCT box on the M5 is one of the very best, if not the best, currently in production.

I can only assume that you drive it as an auto out of town.

As JPM would say.....

You cannot be serious!!

He said Outside of Town though so perhaps isn't referring to the gearbox as it's pretty much running with a perfect gearbox. Also the Auto wipers, just change their sensitivity & hey presto all's good.

To clarify: I did mean that the gearbox is hopeless in town. I just don't think I t is intuitive enough to drive smoothly, and its inability to stop without either jerking or starting off again is plain irritating.

You have to switch the auto wipers on after the ignition to get the light to come on. Whose idea was that?

I would reiterate that it is otherwise a pretty much faultless car.

Any of the cars you have mentioned are going to depreciate fairly horrifically, especially if purchased brand new.

If you live in the highlands of Scotland, choose the 4wd. If you live anywhere else choose the M5.

LOL. I have had LCI M5 and now M6 GC CP, both brilliant in towns.

I have recently sold my 20 month old Audi S3 8v and will be taking delivery of a new M3 F80 in September. I managed to get a 15% discount and buy all my cars on PCP so less focused on depreciation and more what it costs me each month. the 4.9% rate is better than i was getting on the Audi. The M5 is currently at 0% for a new one and there are some good discounts also.

In the meantime I'm borrowing my dad's F10 M5 which is AWESOME.

The F10 is a big car. I feel it is more saloon and less sports car, even though it's an absolute BEAST and goes like the clappers. I think the M3 is more nimble and more sporty and suits my younger image better. I'm not ready for an M5 yet, I'm 30... maybe in a few years time after I've got the M3 out of my system!

M5 better equipped with soft-close doors and electric tailgate but it does feel massive by comparison.

Don't go for the RS4 as within 12 months the next one will be out and you'll want to change again!

Used M5 would probably suffer the least depreciation i would expect. You could get a 2 year old one for £45 - £50k but then my new M3 was only £56k with £10k's worth of extras thrown in.

whichever car you go for you'll be happy. make sure you drive them all properly before you make a decision!

I'm coming to the end of 2.5 years and 40k miles in an F10 M5 and its nothing short of epic. Bonkers fast but you can't really use it most of the time. Nothing better for eating up motorway miles. Feels like a big brute of a car with a big engine (funnily enough) and is pretty stealthy too if that's what you are after as most people can't tell it apart from most other 5 series. Never heard a single person get one and not like it a lot.

Having said all that, it's time for a change and I have gone for an F80 M3 as its a bit smaller and lighter and whilst not quite up there with the pace of the M5 it's definitely no slouch. Also looks a bit more of a sporty car than the M5.

Brave man!

Monster V8 to turbo straight six....I could not imagine doing that, but I'd be interested to hear how it goes for you.

The engine and poor wet traction are major issues with the M3/M4 for me.....found the M4 horrendous on anything other

than a smooth surface....and almost unusable in cold, wet conditions.....VERY frustrating!

They don't feel like M-cars to me!

One other thing to bear in mind is that the LCI refresh of the M3/4 is supposedly due soon.

M3 LCI cars are in production now,

Yes I did consider it for a while before committing myself but I didn't want another M5, just fancied a change. Looked at the M6GC but it was just too big for me and thought I'd give the F80 a go. I was encouraged by a comment in this month's EVO that said a brand new M3 they were recently given was like night and day compared with the early M4 they were so critical of. Said it was possibly the best M3 or M4 they had ever driven, so I reckon BMW might have done a bit of chassis or suspension tweaking on the quiet based on some of the early reviews. No evidence to back this up at all but it would make sense if they have!

I can't fault the gearbox in any driving condition, it's part of the briliance of the machine IMO yes
