I need a couple of rears for my F10 M5 - and will fit Michelin PSS to replace existing PSS.

The issue is that I can source the correct size at a decent price and get them in a day or so - but they do not have the 'star' which apparently denotes they are BMW specific.

My stealer has quoted a price for the BMW specific tyres with the star but they are 50% more expensive and it looks like a lead time of 4 or 5 weeks, or pay double the price to get them sourced by BMW Germany and wait 10 or 12 days.

How important is the star rating? Or any other suggestions?

Not quite the same, but I ran PSS on my M3 and they did not have a star. I also have them on my turbo and they are not Porsche rated at all. The difference is non existant in my experience.

My dealer buys their tyres from protyre and adds their healthy margin. I buy direct from protyre.

I'll buy * marked if they're available and no premium but otherwise I don't bother.

Edit: This is on an old M3 though, might be worth double checking any insurance issues on a a high value car.

That.

Michelin don't as far as i know make different variants of the MPSS for the different car mfctrs, it's just a marketing shortcut that the tyre will be rated for the speeds & weight of the relevant car. For the F10 M5 you'll need the highest speed rating & extra load & i think the BMW Star means just that.

As long as the tyre is the correct size & rating, you'll be fine. Don't forget that most cars leave the factory with different brand tyres & this depends on supply & price no doubt. I don't think the early F10 M5's had MPSS, i'm sure they were on P Zero's.

So ordered non- star PSS and including fitting they will be about £195 each for 295/30 r20 101Y. Probably cheapest rear tyres I've bought for nearly 10 years.

I paid a dealer double that amount to replace one of my fronts in 2012!

That's mighty impressive

I've just bought 4 new Michelin PSS at £200 each plus VAT frown

My car is a November 2013 and came with P Zero's and I fancy a change - I understand the Michelin PSS suits the car better than Pirelli.

PSS are fantastic. Go for it! Had P Zeros on my 911 and they weren't even as good as PS2s

Was checking Tyreleader this morning & can get the BMW specific MPSS at less than £180 per corner including VAT which is a total bargain. Please note my wheels are 19's as i'm sure the 20's would cost more.

Off to collect my m5 this morning. Yes I can't wait...

Went for a look at it last night through the window and as expected just stunning!!

Only thing I noticed was it was wearing p-zeros .. Slight disappointed as I thought PSS were the standard tyres for the car and I've bought them for a number of my recent performance cars for obvious reasons...

As I've sent a few emails to BMW following my disappointment of the build getting later and later they pushed it forward 3 weeks so I feel a bit cheeky to complain about the tyres....

Will the p-zeros perform well enough... Am guessing so

They'll be fine but maybe not as good as MPSS.

Which in a way answers the question about the importance of the * marking, in that the difference between * marked and non marked MPSS (if there is a difference) is going to be much less than the difference between the Michelin and the Pirelli.

Insurers aren't going to be interested in how the tyres are marked as long as they are the right spec. Most, if not all, manufacturers have a similar form of OE mark but very few make a fuss about replacing them with the same.

Sounds like the opposite is true and later cars had Pirellis. Mine was a dealer demonstrator (option code 999) and is still wearing it's original MPSS all round.

Cheers,
Bryn.

If anybody is still looking for a new set of tyres I have a full set that have only done 2k miles and are available on almost new (2k miles old) Competition Pack wheels in exchange for your existing 19 or 20 inch wheels for about the same cost as a new set of tyres. The tyres are the correct MPSS. See PH classified for details.

I need new tyres all round and the best price I can find for PSSs on 20" rims is £879 with free delivery on Tyreleader. Anyone think of anywhere better than that?
