legal registration plate?

Does anyone know if this arrangement is still legal (for MOT)?

The white 3D numbers, etc are legal for a car of that age, the regulations are not retrospective.
Spacing probably isn't legal but I'd be surprised if it would be failed on that as it's very clear.

Thanks for this, chaps. My MOT station read the legislation to me over the phone...apparently numbers have to be on a plate/solid background, not recessed, and not on a 'honeycomb' background..?????

Go somewhere else and tell them not to bother starting the test. The only thing I would say is that perhaps there should be a space between the letters on the number but other than that it looks absolutely correct for the period.

Well mine sailed through with no bother. Can't see how it can be a problem as it is not a modification from the original spec. See loads of Elans with this set up.

As Andy says, virtually all Elites (Type 14),Elans and Europas have these number plates and I seriously doubt that they are all illegal. Today I passed a very smart Elan +2 on the forecourt of Beaulieu Garage with a front plate like that and I am sure they don't have trouble getting an MOT.

I have had trouble with this in the past but generally it is in more mainstream garages who have young cubs who look at the current copy of the MOT testers manual and test of the basis of what it says.
In period the vixen had individual digits on a mesh background within the grill. This is Legal and as previous posters non retrospective.
You need a more savvy test station

MoT exempt, but I don't think Duncan has ever been pulled for illegal registration plates.
