As many regulars may know; I'm a driving instructor.
I have to be fairly skilled in teaching and communicating clearly and sometimes quickly.
I don't let pupils hold people up any more than is absolutely necessary and if needed, I step in and take the control from the passenger seat with the dual controls & steering.

But it's becoming a daily occurrence that Joe Public will tailgate, overtake (when pupils are at the maximum speed limit); overtake just as we are turning right; blast the horn if we take a fraction of a second longer than they do to move off.

I had a van driver pull into a space today that my pupil was mid way through reverse parallel parking into then the driver had a go at me asking what the F*** we were doing.

Well, we had reverse lights on and were at an angle just entering a parking space. It's a tough one to recognise but yes we were reverse parallel parking mate!

We didn't just stop in front of him; we had actually passed him earlier where he was parked half on the pavement. It was several minutes later that he arrived behind us.

Another van driver today stopped to let us out of a side road (nice gesture) but my pupil who was on her 2nd lesson isn't super fast just yet at moving off (that's why we were on quiet back-roads).

He then gets irate; screeching his tyres and redlining his van effing and blinding with a very angry face.

I've also had the comment "why do you have to bring your learners out on public roads"

Uhhm, so where would be best to teach them to get used to junctions, roundabouts, traffic lights, crossings, level crossing, traffic and other road users. Perhaps the private roads around the mansion that I and all other driving instructors are privileged to own?

The toughest part of the job is dealing with these morons & trying to keep the pupil and other mambers of the public safe as a result of their stupid actions, all whilst trying to teach the pupil to drive with good observations, accuracy and control and respect for all other road users.

Learning takes some time; not everyone is a naturally gifted driver and achieves perfection in the first hour of training having never driven before.

Even one of my naturally gifted pupils (virtually test ready after just 8 lessons having never driven before) got blasted once because she gave way to another driver coming from our right at a roundabout. The car was coming at speed, not signalling and straddling both lanes. If we'd gone we'd have been hit!

Are people getting worse and more angry behind the wheel?

And why the hell would anyone with any sense expect a learner driver to do everything text book, they certainly don't & they are FLH's!

a mr / mrs / miss angry in their secure metal box

I have noticed lots of younger women just lately being very aggressive when driving or just walking in the street or getting on a train almost like they are trying to compete with angry Anderson from angryville

not saying younger men are not angry little sods as well

but in fact van drivers seem recently the calmest I have come across

Did 35 miles on the M5 southbound Saturday morning and saw 2 incidents of people having "rolling" arguments. Both times windows down and pointing arms out of the windows. Not seen this on a motorway before.

I've noticed it a couple of times.

First on the M6 where it leaves to join the M42. Long queues and eventually I decided to continue down to M6. Despite it not making any read difference I had to fight my way from Lane 1 to Lane 2 (both slip lanes), and while looking to rejoin M6 proper had a lorry for a few seconds could see a lorry behind going nots with on.off power to stay glued to my bumper. Looked like he was playing pogo.

Then further on a car slowing to 40 on the A1 due to a temporary speed limit and another HGV trying to push him, flashing lights etc.

It's all gone nuts.

Does anything ever improve? We seem to be on a steady decline in all areas. The root cause to all issues in life is vast world overpopulation. Every family I know seems to be on a mission to sire as many children as possible. One day when the world resembles Bladerunner, we may look back on today as if it were a utopia.

I have noticed it too unfortunately. I tend to be quite careful on the road and only drive quickly when I think it is safe and appropriate.

Sticking to speed limits and general road rules seems to annoy some people. Whilst I am youngish and more than confident/capable behind the wheel I don't let it bother me. But for some people I can see it being quite intimidating.

I worked night shift for years and never had to drive amongst the commoners, but last year I went back onto day shift and now have to endure rush hour traffic every day. It's terrifying. Everyone just seems to think they are the most important person on the road and shouldn't have to wait for anyone else.

It's every day now that I see people going around roundabouts in the wrong lane to skip traffic. People mounting pavements so they don't have to wait for a single lane to widen into two lanes etc. People are just utter tts. Unintelligent tts.

I've witnessed this two days running on the M1, through the average speed section, (50mph) by the works for the new junction at Dunstable. Each time, HGV's have agressively tailgated, flashed their lights, and on one occasion, sounded their horn at motorists just trying to stay safe and legal. silly

As a cycle commuter I totally get this
Most, if not all, of my experiences of bad driving are not white van man at all but young women

The driving school thing though challenges me

We moved house 10 years ago and soon realised we were in prime driving lesson territory
For the first few years I was as patient as you could possibly be, but driving home to find several L drivers practicing 3 point turns and consequently blocking your street would test the patience of the Dalai Lama

Cheers

Nope, it only gets worse. Hopefully the recent budget should make these fkers think twice before they spawn another dozen little sts. Makes me glad I won't ever be having children.

I think it's part of the Feminazi culture. A lot of young women seem to have chips on their shoulders and are itching to see sexism and discrimination against them everywhere they go just so they can have a fight about it and prove they have some sort of strength and superiority. I'm all for genuine feminism and equality but all the aggression and belligerence that's often expressed in the name of feminism damages an important cause.

I'm only 30 but the attitudes of many girls in their late teens and early twenties seems entirely different to when I was at university. Then again, I spent less time on social media then so I guess I wasn't exposed to where they were being given a voice and I only socialised with the calmer ones.

I would say so. Increasingly, people seem unable or unwilling to acknowledge their mistakes on the road anymore.

I actually think that dealing with your own emotions and those of others on the road should be built into both the theory and practical tests. A sad state of affairs I know but unfortunately this is the world we live in.

I find my self getting more and more wound up every time im in the car. I can see why loose cannons could easily be set off, every time im in the car there seems to be 1-3 near misses (mostly people pulling out on me), people in the wrong lane, people not indicating, people tailgating etc etc etc.

I think the public as a group seem to be becoming more arrogant, unpleasant, rude and selfish as time progresses. They all seem to be developing this strange false sense of entitlement.

Must say I do miss the nightshift commute - apart from being knackered in the morning!

People who are s towards learner drivers need shooting / removed from the road depending on your preference for violence

I do feel like I'm in the minority of people who stick to speed limits. Usually when I go through a 30 zone at 30mph with no cars behind me, by the time I reach the end of a 1/2 mile stretch there are 5 or 6 cars behind me. I'm usually tail gated and hassled for this.

Seems that no one thinks these should be adhered to these days, and they are the most important ones to obey.

People are not very forgiving of others on our roads.

I like to think that I'll forgive others for minor, genuine mistakes they make - nobody is perfect. I especially prefer it when people apologise for their errors. What is obvious from the PH dash cam video thread is that there is a breed of motorist who believes that everyone on the road should be perfect and will get hung up on these minor little things instead of simply getting on with life.

On the other hand I personally detest people who use speeding or incorrect lane discipline to gain an advantage - it does get me angry. I'm not sure why, but it's definitely much worse if my own progress is impeded by others' actions.

Grrr
