I have a HP Spectre XT Pro laptop (i5, 4GB Ram, SSD). This morning, whilst using it plugged into mains it dies instantly, no screen, no light on the charging port and won't re-start, no life. It has a sealed SSD and battery (need to remove the back plate to gain access) but do you know if I can unclip the battery and try to run it off mains only? It is out of warranty and has no data I need on it.

You can try, but are you sure the power supply and the input socket are OK ? Sounds like more a fault with one of them.

sounds more like the mains adapter or the mains socket in the laptop has died - normally, batteries don't fail instantly - they'll give some prior warning
