Fly to Pisa, day in Lucca and day in Florence.
Or Rome, plenty for 3 days there.

Fly to Milan Malpensa, drive to Lake Como or Maggiore - stay near Stresa in the latter, Tremezzo in the former.

Or fly to Bologna and drive to Florence.

Or fly to Pisa and drive to Florence or Siena.

Or fly to Rome and go to err….. Rome.

Or fly to Naples and do Pompeii and Herculaneum.

Should have added, no driving, I want to have a few drinks and the missus won't drive in Italy.

Cheers for the suggestions so far.

Como is brilliant. No driving needed, though you should rent a speedboat for an afternoon, as there's no speed limit on the lake and you can have a 40hp boat with no licence. I rented one from Non Solo Barche in Cernobbio for not much.

I stayed in Como town, which is a short train ride from Milano Centrale (passing Monza!). The ferry takes you everywhere else on the lake

Wife and I have been going to Italy every year for the past 10+ years and we've never driven over there. If I was asked to recommend somewhere for only 3 nights I'd propose:

  • Lake Come (fly in to Milan Malpensa and get a transfer)
  • Stay at a hotel in Belagio (can recommend The Metropole)
Why?,

  • Central lake position means lots of ferries to all the local towns
  • Lots to do and see eg villas and gardens, lovely lakeside towns such as Menaggio, Varena, Lenno, Belano, all by ferry
  • If the child needs a break there's a lido and beach at Belagio too!
  • Fantastic views etc
  • Good local restaurants in Belagio
Someone else has recommended Pisa and then use the train. I think it is better to fly into Pisa and get a transfer and be based in Lucca (40 minutes). Lucca is a wonderful small walled town to just walk around with lots of culture and other things. You can then get a train to:

  • Pisa (20 minutes)
  • Florence (1 1/2 hours and the station is very central)
  • Viareggio ( 30 minutes) lovely beach resort.
Personally, 3 nights is just not enough time really: you need at least a week!

This year we're heading off to Sicily for two weeks and getting around by train and bus...a bit of a challenge for us.

Como is looking like the favourite at the moment - cheers for the suggestions.

I agree 3 nights isn't enough, the wife & I had 10 days in the Caribbean in May, the unholy trinity (Mother-in-law, wife & daughter) are off on a Disney cruise end of August (not my cup of tea!) so we just fancied a few days away as a family to somewhere we haven't been before. We have a 3-4 week euro road trip planned next summer so will definitely be adding a few more days/places in Italy.

What's your budget hotel wise - we always stay here -mid priced, friendly and with an excellent restaurant, 300yds from a boat stop, 500yds from the Hotel Grand Tremezzo. Understated and lovely - get a lake view room and wake to the view of Bellagio across the water from your balcony.

We're off to Italy for 3 nights in a few weeks before heading over to Nice.

I've booked us a hotel in Stressa on lake Maggiore and we plan on taking it easy,
probably using the ferries to explore the islands, checking out a few local shops, restaurants and just enjoying the view of the lake from our hotel room balcony.

It's the 1st time we've been so I'm hoping It lives upto expectations.
