So I need to buy a couple of items, bring 2 spare batteries and a intervalometes ( actually I need a lot of other stuff, but will start another thread if needed) for an upcoming trip, seems non OEM are a fraction of the price of the canon ones in both cases.
Is there any catch with this, or is it canon just charging more because they are the official supplier?
or are these things just a false economy?

I've bought third party ones for both my Canons from 7 day shop and they have been just as good as the official Canon ones

I have OEM batteries for each of my Nikons. Both were about 1/3rd of the price of the genuine article and both are just fine. I don't even consider which ones are which, I just chuck a battery in.

Thanks, good to know, will push ahead with the 3rd party version.

Any thoughts on the intervalometers?

Any recommendation on what to look for ?

Is it worth buying a fully remote one as opposed to a connected version?

I have some 3rd party batteries that no longer charge in my canon 6d charger, work fine in the camera. A 3rd party charger isnt expensive tho. A modern knockoff battery should be ok I guess.

As for intervalvometers..

Option 1 - install magic lantern, has a fully featured one built in.

Option 2 - a cheap yongnuo style cable release one , these work reasonably reliably.

option 3 - a new knockoff battery grip with IV built in , not tried this option

option 4 - hahnel giga t pro II remote control. A little more complex but works very very well and up to 100m away. Love mine!
