Bikers face a number of common issues: scamera vans, dodgy road surfaces with pot holes,
diesel and other slippery crap, mobile phone using car drivers, suicidal pedestrians and cyclists,
exposure to the elements, risk of death or injury and general misunderstanding or negative opinions of non-motorcyclists. On the plus side motorcyclists share a love of the freedom and thrills that only riding a motorbike can bring.

One might hope that the shared joys and adversities would bind bikers together....but judging by many threads in here (the one about GSs being a recent example) this doesn't seem to be the case with true vitriol being reserved not for non-bikers but for those fellow bikers that don't ride exactly the same types of bikes or dare to enjoy biking in different ways.

I know some of the criticism is banter but there seems to be more than that with some people on here.

If I didn't live by the motto: never underestimate the capacity for human stupidity, I would probably despair.

Reminds me a bit of a scene from my favourite film:

(Brian): Brothers, we should be fighting against the common enemy!

(Others - looking around): What, the Judean's people's Front?

(Brian): No, the Romans!

Actually I think most people here do seem to get on relatively well.

The vitriol you speak of in general I think can be summed up as, "Bikers don't like a***holes"

In general;

Parking like an a***hole
Damaging other peoples property (Seemingly with impunity), again being an a***hole
Blocking others progress in traffic, being an inconsiderate a***hole

Either way it's more down to not liking the behaviour of others rather than the chosen model of motorised transport.
(Typically the 1st 2 are scooters, and the last would be GS riders as a stereotype).

As to other road traffic, most people (cars, motorcycles etc) don't like being inconvenienced.

The problem is people don't read a whole thread, they dip and one comment taken out of context is quoted and they through a hizzy fit. That or no one has a sense of humour.

Like most groups there's a clique on BB, many of the jokes are in-jokes or long standing ribbings, between just a few posters.

My favourite posts are the ones where people actually acknowledge that they haven't read the thread, as if they're too busy or whatever, but then go on to violently agree/disagree with the someone about something regardless of whether it's still even being discussed.

I saw something in the Lounge the other day where someone quoted a post and added "I haven't read any more of the thread but I agree with this!" Bizarre.

Generally everyone gets on generally...don't they ? ...I mean at least bikers have one thing in common to talk about ...usually wink

Choice of bike you ride is just about having the right tool for the job at the time, and in an ideal world, I want at least one of every type of bike in the garage depending on mood

...but people are all different and just because they ride a bike does not make them the same or any more balanced in their views of the world. The internet brings everyone together from the 16 yr old learner to the 70 yr old hand who's tried everything and still looking for more

There is no natural enemy as the armies of mods on scooters have grown up, so now we have to take the mick out of fellow biker cliques wink

Like the middle aged boy racer types who just passed their test and bought a new superbike in his fave team colours with matching leathers and underpants, turns up at bike meets with 2" chicken strips and talks about how he was thrashing it on the way there

Or the boring accountant who made it to 50 and now wants to rebel for the first time in his life and become a biker...so he goes down the Harley shop and comes out with a Fatboy dressed as a gay pirate ...they party so hard at corporate organised events, they even get drunk sometimes

The IT worker looking for adventure in his life, buys a GS with panniers and a goretex suit, but never goes further than Skegness on it, and considers riding down a bridle path as "offroading"

they are all out there...just having fun on bikes in their own way smile

This is the correct answer.

The Crowd: Tell us more!

Brian: No! That's the point! Don't let anyone tell you what to do!

I'm not a biker, I just ride bikes, I also have a very low tolerance level for annoying tts,and posters who add nothing to threads, or post pointless nonsense.

If you pick a random selection of people off BB, put them in a room and see how many actually like each other there'll be fewer than you think, I'm not actually that social in real life and think most folk are self absorbed knobs but the folk I have met on here (and thats quite a few) have been mostly ok.

I also think that folk can hide behind their keyboards, there's things that have been said that you wouldn't dream of saying if you were stood next to me, or most others I know off here.

Lol...

Bunch of blokes discussing bikes. There is bound to be some assholes. Some people who are know it all's and can't agree to differ on a point. Others are just rude because of the medium of the forum allows them to be so.

Then you get the guys who have a aloofness because they have managed to get into the fast group after doing a gazillion track days. So cannot be wrong ever and deliver their words with a condescending arrogance that irks the most patient among us..

You also have folks who have so much time on their hands they can post every 30 seconds. Or have the energy to pick fights and carry it on forever.

The most annoying are the guys who think they are funny and every post they make should be read in some manner where whatever they say is interpreted as funny or serious depending upon their mood. Dare you misinterpret their musings as you have to take a load of st off them.

I just stay away from those chaps and just try to enjoy the forum talking about bikes. You get dragged in but you need to sometimes drag yourself out.

This. I can't think of a bike I wouldn't want to own, and I've never ridden a bike I didn't find fun smile

Two things I hate.

1) The belief that because we're all motorcyclists we have a mutual common ground. We don't.

2) The post slagging match analysis of internet forum rows. People need to have thicker skin.

Disagree..

1. We are all motorcyclists and do have a mutual common ground! Motorcycles!?! We have a lot in common… why the hell else are you on here unless you want to socialise with people you have something in common with? That theory doesn’t even make sense. Why you on here?

2. Rather then everyone have thicker skin so wkers can just be blunt. Why cant people just be fking polite?! wink
