Where do your loyalties lie?
Discussion
I've been driving for near enough 5 and a bit years now (young I know) but have changed almost 8 cars already.
I started off with your standard tin-can hatchback but then I ventured onto BMW's.. Since then, I haven't wanted to drive anything else. I have had other cars in between but it's always been a hateful relationship until I get back in the seat of a BMW.
They're unreliable, expensive and thirsty and people call you a tw*t but I honestly can't see myself driving anything else day-to-day.
What about you, where are your brand loyalties and why?

I have none.
Used to like MB, but they finally cured me of that.
I will go for what suits my needs, my budgets, and my aspirations at the time.
Mainstream cars are a lot better generally, and premium service poorer, so that there is no difference otherwise between them.
Naturally, if a BMW wouldn't be practical in suiting my needs, I wouldn't go for one - But it's the fact that it will always be my number one preference when looking for a new car.Used to like MB, but they finally cured me of that.

Having said that, I don't find the new range of Beemers inspiring at all.
Been driving 7 years and have owned 11 cars:
VW, VW, Toyota, VW, Toyota, Kia, Ford, VW, VW, Renault, Mini.
I don't actually have any 'loyalty'.
When I started driving I was in the 'VW scene' as such. Got bored and shifted interest to Jap imports.
Had a break from driving and everything from the Kia onwards has been coincidence (company cars).
The Mini I bought on a bit of a whim. I like loads of different cars from many different brands, and have a sort of unofficial bucket list of cars I want to have owned some day.
Porsche is the only brand I obsess about but I'm not in a position to own one yet.

Of all the cars I have owned I would say that the brands I am most loyal to are Mercedes and Honda.
I have owned 3 Merc's and 4 Honda's. I currently have a Honda and that's simply because there wasn't a Mercedes that fitted my needs and on the other side of the coin I was getting a little tired of the Mercedes corrosion problem.
I have had a few other makes thrown into the mix and with the way companies are sharing platforms and parts its making it a lot harder to be loyal to one company as the car you think is one make is actually another almost going back to the badge engineering that was so popular in days gone by, especially with the british car companies.

When I had a Saab 900 I was a Saab guy. Then they brought out the GM "900" and I hated it. No more Saab guy.
When I had my 944 I was a Porsche guy. Then I had a MKII Jag (as a daily, yes) and I was a Jag guy. Then a Vauxhall Omega 3L, and I was quite impressed by it but not a Vauxhall guy. At all. Then my 928 and a Porsche guy again. Then a GranSport and I was a Maserati guy. Then an old Grand Cherokee and I was a "shed guy" for a couple of months. Now in a Jag X350 and I'm a Jag guy again.
Until the next car.
I've owned and recommended to family (with a resulting purchase) more VAG produced cars than anything else, I'm missing the big three, Lambo, Bentley, and Bugatti from the full set. However the bits of VAG I can afford isn't where my heart lies, only my head but I would like to be able to scratch off the remaining three from my list.

Really? I wouldn't go that far. I've had quite a few older BMWs (E34, E30, E46, E39) and I never thought they were unreliable per se, just had a few 'quirks' that needed attention like any other car. Worn wiper spindles on the E34, requiring a £550 replacement mechanism is one quirk I'll always remember, but it didn't stop them working!I started off with your standard tin-can hatchback but then I ventured onto BMW's.. Never got called a tw@t driving them either. Must just be you
There's a certain something about Bimmers I like, mainly the way they are constructed. My old E34 525i Touring was a tank and was approaching 200K before I sold it. Never broke down under my ownership. Not loyal to BMWs at all, but do like them. I'm more biased to German in general I'd say. Just like them as an overall package and I ignore the PH VAG bashing drivel spouted on here as it's unsubstantiated nonsense.
I've never had any particular loyalties as such, but I like what I like.
I love fast RWD cars, so that used to mean Cosworths when I was younger, and M3s more recently.
I also like small fun FWD hot hatches, which has seen me at the wheel of 205 GTis throughout my life.
I love great engines ..... The engine is the heart of a car, and I love a great sounding / performing engine, hence the afor mentioned Cosworth and M3 offerings, however also had V6 Alfas and a life long affinity for the Vauxhall C20 XE Red Top ....... My Mk2 Escort has one!!
I've never had a Jap car, not really gelled with the VAG cars I've tried, and don't like Mercs.
I too, like the OP, have kept finding my way back into BMWs. They've been great to me over the years, and been lots of fun too. Weighed up objectively, they've always floated by boat compared to other competitors, for the types of cars I've been in the market for at the type.
I've no particular allegiance, however whilst VAG remain dull, Merc remain crap, JLR remain unreliable, GT3 Porsches remain expensive, Alfas remain Fiats, Ford and Vauxhall remain FWD, French remain flaky, and Japanese remain tantalisingly close to making a good car, I'll stay that way.
(runs for cover as some of the above might be a little incendiary)

VAG. Over the years I've owned over a dozen ranging from original Beetle to A8. I bought a '95 Mercedes E320 Coupe early last year and whilst it was good in many ways, there were features I couldn't live with (e.g. foot operated parking brake) whereas there's nothing about any of my VWs or Audis that I disliked. As they've been pretty reliable too, I've never seen a reason to 'stray'.
ive only had a handful of cars, it went a little something like 1) nova sr (never would own a Vauxhall unless monaro again) 2) polo 16v, great little car - quite liked the mk5 gti but was after more power 3) evo vi -would own again shame theyre a dying breed 4) clio 172, best hot hatch ive owned 5) tts - dull vag pap all glitz and no substance. I want to try a BMW next, am thinking z4m or a e46 m3.. Hmm We'll see.
