I am going into hospital tomorrow for a hip replacement and am facing a lengthy recuperation period, so I am looking at what is available to watch on TV. Freeview seems hopeless at the moment so I am thinking about biting the bullet and signing up to either Netflix or Amazon Prime. I have no idea of the merits of either so I am looking to pistonheads to help me decide.
Which would you choose and why?

Considering this ourselves so went to the Netflix site to see what they have and unless I am being a completely dozy fool, I cannot find a list of what they offer.

Seems a trifle short sighted not to have a flaming big button that says HERE'S THE GOOD STUFF COME AND BROWSE!

I have Prime for the reason that it doesn't cost me anything. It's ok. There are a few films worth watching bit for the most part the movie side is properly low brow. But then I remember BlockBuster used to be like that and I suspect most of the streaming services are.

There are quite a few TV series but again, an awful lot are real tripe.

However, there is some cracking stuff on there. Not an awful lot but enough for a bed ridden punter to pretty much watch most of it within a 30 day trial so I'd definitely recommend what someone above suggested and start with their trial.

Netflix, I've never experienced but if I compensate for the 'grass is greener' effect then I suspect that it isn't an awful lot different. But of they do a 30 day trial then I guess you will have a bucket load of free and cracking viewing for 60 days.

Good luck with the op. Hope you're up and about long before 60 days is up.

I've found Now TV to be the best of the bunch if you're just after movies. Headline number of movies is pretty low but the quality and range of relatively new stuff is unbeatable in my opinion. Some pretty good deals knocking around for the box with a month or two of movies included.

Bump.

I had a free trial of Netflix with my new Vodafone contract. I thought it was ok but didn't renew when it came to it, much to the kids disappointment

I do order quite a bit of stuff off amazon, so the prime thing might be a good idea

I assume the list of films and box sets is pretty much the same across the two?

Can't believe there is a topic PHers aren't opinionated about

We have both, and I find I use Netflix much more than Amazon. Not sure if this is just down to difference in content, or because Netflix is quite clever in working out your taste and offering up stuff it thinks will appeal. Netflix has Trailer Park Boys, too, which alone is worth the price!

If ever there were a reason for free trials, this is it. Sign up to both and see which floats your boat.

I currently have Amazon Prime on trial. You have to pay for anything decent, which is a little frustrating to say the least. Yes, some stuff is free, but not much. For instance, you have to pay for american sniper, but four series of the It crowd can all be streamed for free. However, I have taken advantage of the free next day delivery service. Its worked on one occasion out of three orders frown Also, its not quite as good as you first think.

I bought a document tray for my desk using prime. Normal is £7.99 with free delivery. Prime is £8.99. No such thing as a free lunch.

Netflix. Everything can be streamed. Do I have that right? To me that slightly better than Prime.

Prime will eventually show Top Gear replacement, so that's an added bonus smile

We have both and flick between the two, so they get roughly 50/50 usage. Both have plenty to watch, the main issue is deciding on what to put on. Netflix is better to use via our TV, but their menu system is annoying, most of it seems to be just suggestions based on earlier things you've watched, I would prefer simple lists under 'Comedy', 'Action', 'Documentaries', 'Gibberish my wife like to watch' etc rather than suggestions. The lists do appear, but quite often they don't seem to have all the categories (new releases seems to disappear quite often). Prime is better laid out, but the menu system is slower (not sure if it's due to our TV or their app). They did go for a phase a month or two ago of adding very little, but recently quite a few things have been added. The exclusive series I've watched on both have been good (although I've not watched that many).

Sometimes paying for both seems a bit daft, but it's a lot cheaper than a decent Sky package and doesn't have adverts.

Prime pays for itself for me due to the other stuff it saves me. So it is in effect, free. Netflix offers 'nout but TV... but still well worth the cost.

Horses/courses.

I do both. If I had to ditch one, it would be Netflix (but I have Sky movies, so that would be why).

Depends.

If you have limited bandwidth on your broadband. Netflix.

Amazon is broadband hungry.

Or... Just get both smile
