Anyone have experience of contesting a transaction from a petrol station abroad?

I filled up in Belgium, in a car that can only fit €50-60 worth of fuel when it's on fumes. The transaction on my credit card is €124.

It was one of those auto machines next to the pump. Enter card, choose petrol, choose pump then enter PIN. Pump is then enabled for use. It didn't offer a receipt.

I know for certain the 'from empty' amount in Euros because I filled up at the ring and it was €53.

I've emailed Texaco customer services, but not sure what chance I stand.

Happened to anyone else?

Sounds like someone filled up straight after you as the transaction didn't "finish" so to speak.

I think you need to take it up with your credit card company too

Some more info from Texaco. Apparently the €124 is a test amount, they ask the credit card company "this bloke wants some petrol, don't know how much, is he good for €124?" That's why the amount is a suspicious round number.

Cc company replies yes, then Texaco say, "OK, he spent €50.24". Texaco say the €124 should never appear on your statement.

Just asked cc company what the f is going on...

Sounds a sensible approach for an automated pump. Also good response from the fuel company. Sounds like a cock up with the cc company. Hope you get it sorted quickly.

Is it actually showing on the statement, or just earmarked?

AFAIK a lot of places use £99 over here for the same process smile

Yes, it's actually showing as a transaction. Credit card company have now replied saying the pre-authorisation amount shouldn't have appeared and it will show correctly in a day.

Good response from Texaco and We Swap. I only checked so quickly because it's a pre-pay credit card and wanted to see what balance was left.

Could be all sorts. The Golf rental car I had a couple of weeks ago would only hold that.
