Hi All,
Well on my way through a partial bottom end rebuild - being done in situ - Do I need to replace the crankshaft main bearing bolts? I'm fitting new bearing journals and don't want to spoil things if this should be done, and lastly I can see various torque setting recommendations for the big end and main bearing caps. Is there a TVR recommendation? I haven't been able to find anything yet........
Cheers

I`m assuming your talking 5ltr.

Bolts can be re used no problem.

Look for torque settings for a 3.9 v8. Plenty of manuals online.

Big end bolts can also be re used 50lb ft.

ETA Just looked at your profile. If its a pre serp go with the 3.9 manual.

Hope that helps.

Hi - Many thanks for the reply, yes it's a 4.3 Pre-Serp.
Will start searching for 3.9 manuals
Cheers!

Be sure to keep the thread updated; including pics - you renewing mains and big ends? Be very interested how you get on doing those if so

Firstly many thanks for all the help.
Have now swapped out the bearings.........
Big Ends: Apart from being subjected to oil drips from 'above' fairly straightforward. There's enough room to push the pistons up and change over both shells.
Mains: Interestingly on my engine there was only one shell for controlling end float - should be two halves - not unsurprisingly this was well worn, but strangely I've had the car since just a few years old and it's run fine, and as far as I know, the engine's never been apart. Odd! I used a filed down screw placed into the crank oilway to push the shells in and out of the engine block. Not sure how this could have been done otherwise.
The thing that took quite some time was pushing the car back and forward to turn the engine into the correct position. I'm fortunate in having an inspection pit (not so fortunate in that it fills with water) so was able to rock the car back and forward to turn the engine. However even with the spark plugs out this was both time consuming and took some effort. A better means of turning the engine would have been a great help.
So now onto the torquing up and putting the sump pan back on..............Need to get the car back on the road for a trip to Spa in September!

It's quite common to use just a 'half' shell on thrust bearings these days :-)

That half thrust shell is as it should be my intermediate serp small journal block was the same wink your engine is what mine is based on only for the later front cover wink for example this is a genuine bearing set

Hi,
The 'Heritage' bearing set I had delivered had two half shells and both the bearing cap and block were relieved to accept thrust bearings, so I've installed both halves - seems logical that two halves are better than one, so to speak!
