So, the situation is, your driving down a fairly quiet motorway in lane 1. You are closing in on Mr or Mrs MLM plodding along in lane 2, whilst lane 1 (your lane) is empty.

What do you do next?

I personally continue in lane one, I know this is undertaking and wrong, however as far as I'm concerned I am maintaining my speed, and shouldn't need to move 4 lanes (2 in 2 out) to overtake.

On my Xmas day drive down the m1 I generally do the same. Just leave Mr moron in lane 4 while I sit in lane one enjoying the miles of emptiness.

How can you undertake anyway? Anyone to the right is overtaking so must be going faster than you surely?

While it grinds my teeth, it's no skin off my nose to overtake on the right in lane 3. Chances are they wont be aware of you anyway.

I'll continue in lane 1. I'm spending more and more of my time on the M25 between J9-J2 and it's just a joke!!

I continue in lane one.

One could argue it isn't really a manoeuvre and doesn't count as 'undertaking'. If you were in the middle lane and then opted to pass in lane one, that would be different.

Pass them in lane 1. *Looks in mirror* Hopefully the MLM might be made to feel a bit stupid and do the right thing and pull into lane 1(?)

That'll be a no then.

Continue in Lane 1, its perfectly legal to do so in the circumstances you have described. But be aware that said numpty may suddenly decide to be in Land 1 as you approach them.

I would do likewise but always considered it to be undertaking - even if an idiot is hogging the middle lane and driving under the limit, aren't we compelled to overtake on the right?

What amazes me is the amount of HGVs sitting in lane 2 at night lately, it's roughly half the heavy traffic doing this too.
Lane 2 gives them more leeway either side when the doze off for a few seconds/minutes wink

I hope I'm understanding that correctly - overtake lane 3, slow down lane 1, overtake lane 3 and so on?

If so, that is a great idea and I accept your challenge... 6 to beat it is! laugh

I have been known to pass in lane 1 if traffic is coming up behind and the lane hogger is particularly slow. It's easier and safer than braking hard or arguing with faster traffic to move across. Generally I move out to lane three and back as I can never be sure that the numpty won't either deliberately try and block me or suddenly decide as I'm passing that he should move over after all.

If someone is hogging a lane from 3 outwards and I pass on the inside, I do it with a lane to spare between me and him so there's plenty of space should he decide to move in. If someone is hogging the outside lane and the lane to the left is free but I can't pass on the inside with a lane to spare, I give a few seconds of full beam to make him aware of my presence. It's less aggressive than flashing and I don't want to be between the lane hogger and the aggressive people behind pulling dangerous moves to get past both me and him.

I've seen a few dangerous situations where one driver has decided to pass a lane hogger on the inside as another has come up behind fast and started tailgating to intimidate the lane hogger into moving over and the panicked lane hogger as then moved over without proper checks and nearly hit the driver passing on the inside. Whatever you do you have to be aware you're dealing with a particularly unpredictable driver and potentially a lot of wound up drivers around him and you have to be very sure you can get past safely.

My daily commute at the mo is m25 from j29 too j13 and it seems much worse on the way home of an evening/night!
1 of the idiots is bad enough but has anyone else noticed when they form in little groups of 4 or 5 cars? Lemmings!

You could always try orbiting them clockwise!

This is not really recommended!

Just think yourselves lucky that you have middle lanes. We only have inside and outside, so don't have the luxury of being able to pass in lane 3.

biggrin

I enjoy doing that on the m25 at night with the t-tops out. Catch a nice breeze on my hand as I let them know their error biggrin
