We're off to Aus for November, with the plan being to fly to Sydney, have a week there visiting friends then pick up a camper van and drive from there to Melbourne, then up into the wine region above Melbourne then over to Adelaide, from where we fly home.

Are there any must-see/do things along the way that people would recommend? Particularly on the Sydney -> Melbourne leg.

Take the coast road (M1/A1) rather than the inland highway(M31), much more scenic and you'll find deserted immaculate beaches every few miles to stop and enjoy.
There aren't a great deal of tourist sightseeing spots along that route, just endless beautiful scenery which bizarrely becomes a bit repetitive and dull after while!!

Having said that, if you want to see what country Australia is really like, then visiting somewhere as awful as Goulburn will open your eyes to what Australia is really about outside the big cities

Around Eden is particularly stunning on the coast road - probably why it got it's name

I've only gone cross-country to Adelaide from Sydney, so can't help much, but once you get there I would recommend Chateau Tanunda for wine tasting and croquet. All the rivers are stunning too, as well as the coastal areas so worth spending time around them. Adelaide is a gorgeous city. If you have time Kangeroo island is worth a visit in Adelaide.

Take the Great Ocean Road from Melbourne to Adelade, one of the worlds great drives. Many small towns to stop off on the way.

We have had 3 months touring Oz and have another 2 planned for next year. We tried the camper van for 1 month of it and hated it, camper vans are total crap, expensive, vulnerable, badly maintained and hard work. Please don't do it! Use a car/SUV and book motels/ hotels and B&B's, much cheaper, better located, more convenient and more reliable.
PM me if you want more info regarding routes etc.

Ooh, thats harsh. Goulburn is just a semi big country town. It's ok. If you really want to know what ste country Australia is all about you could (but don't!!) visit Wilcannia, Kempsey … Lots of inbred hillbillies or bored thieving kids...

I'd agree wîth this. Also agree with the advice to take the coast road, Eden, Lakes Entrance, Metung. Spend some time on the Mornington peninsula if you can.

Mind you, the actual scenery along a lot of the road isn't that great, it's when you pull off and get right on to the coast that it lights up.

You may not be able to but a trip out to Mount Panarama for a few laps of the circuit, even in a camper, is fun! Depends on how much time you'll have I guess.
