Hi,

I'm having a problem with the parents 2008 cmax diesel.

About 6 times now when driving along the check engine message comes up and the ESP light comes on. The car has almost no power and you've no option other than to coast to a stop at the side of the road. You then leave if off for about 10mins and then it will start fine with no warning lights and it drives as expected.

A few garages have looked at it and simply said 'well theres no problem now and there no point trying to read the code cos the lights not on'.

So the question is, will a proper Ford dealer have a more advanced 'computer' that can read the fault code after the light has gone out?

Fault codes are stored and can be read using a code reader at any time until they are manually cleared.

so why are garages quoting the opposite?

laziness? they don't have the proper fault code reading tools?

I found the method to show DTC's on the instrument panel. That also shows no codes.

My wife has a Ford S-Max and a month or so ago when she came home from work she said that the ESP light was on and also there was a message on the dash power steering failure. The far drove normally.

When I started the car the lights were ok and no messages but after a few hundred yards they came on again.I had a good look around the engine and noticed that the power steering fluid was about an inch below the minimum so the next morning I bought some slick 50 power steering fluid and topped up to the maximum started the car and went for a drive and have never has the ESP light come on or the power steering failure message on the dash.

I know this is not the same as your problem but check all the fluids are on the maximum mark.
