We're going to renovate and extend our house, and I've love to take a photo diary but all my lenses are portrait/landscape lenses and nothing in between. The house is only 6M x 7m floorspace so not huge and I struggle to take a picture of a room with any of the lenses.

I have a 450D and would like a cheap lens I can use for taking half decent pictures of the house in progress. Nothing very expensive or fancy, just something that can capture most things in one shot.

Any suggestions?

Sigma 10-20 should do what you want and is a decent lens too

If you are on a Mac this is a fab £10 bit of software to re-jig perspective (which will be all over the place in such a small room) http://www.dxo.com/us/photography/dxo-perspective

Canon's ef-s 10-18 is well worth a look and represents excellent value, I paid less than £200 for mine.

The Canon is a good shout - the Sigma looks LOVELY (and comes up on eBay at £150ish) but I reserve my "Sigma money" for lenses I really want to do something special with - this is arguably just a basic point and click lense for me.

The Sigma is a terrific lens, and when you've finished the house project it'll make a great landscape lens as well - can't go wrong.

Agreed that's my standard fit lens now. Also works brilliant at car shows when it's crowded you can still get full car shots with no crowds. I also use it for star trails.

I have a canon 10-18mm. It's currently got £25 cashback from Canon. I think I ended up paying just shy of £150 for it.

Nice lens for the money and a perfect angle for rooms and houses.

I have a bedroom shot but can't find it at the moment, i'll try and dig it out later.

...which in the process of doing so throws away a load of the photo. OK for landscapes, but totally counter-productive to what's being hoped for here.

err...yes but no. When I use it I shoot wide knowing I'll lose the edges... It's a fairly simple fix.

I've photographed a few paintings in my time, including one for the national trust that was hung high on a wall in petworth house. That bit of software would have made my life 10x easier hehe

Thanks for all the advice, bagged myself a perfect condition Sigma on eBay for £150. Loving it, does exactly what I need it to do - take pictures of a small house in renovation chaos!

It's great, well worth it as it can capture the whole downstairs in one shot. Been really helpful in documenting it fully and seeing the changes.

I love it for landscapes too - definitely my new toy.
