Tell me about sheds.

It comes time in a man's life, when, with two little weeds running around at his feet and constantly sucking the money and time from his bones, that he recognises death's looming presence over his shoulder and so seeks the solace of the open roads on a silly green motorbike and like the hermit in the cave seeks a place of refuge in which he can tinker and potter about in relative peace.

So, I am after a new mancave for storing a motorbike and general escapism, and I thought it would be best to gleam a few opinions regarding the matter.

The criteria are that it must be 10 x 7, pent roof, with double doors - I cannot deviate from this as it will be in my old man's garden, since my new abode is of the terraced variety.

I saw this today: TGB heavy duty

With all the options (22mm tongue and groove timber, floor and double doors) and installation it comes to just shy of £1500.

I am not adverse to putting up a shed, I would actually relish the challenge, so I am wondering if you lot could give me some opinions:

Is it worth the cost? Can you recommend somewhere else? etc.

So please, pass on your knowledge and allow me to have my own place free of Minecraft and In the Night Garden.

I recently asked for similar advice.
Soon realised I will need to get a better job, budget creep being what it is.
Just realised that could be a new nickname for me smile

£1500 is a lot of money for a 10x7 shed. I paid less than a grand for my 14x10 about a year and half ago. Does your budget go a much more than that? Storing motorbike you need to factor in for security etc. I've spent quite a bit on my shed. insulation, electric etc all need to be considered Before putting to much stuff in.

not sure how you can affirm it's expensive or cheap just by the dimensions - there are a lot of variables.

I looked at a 10x8 came out at £1065 for 18mm shiplap, they erected it and wouldn't reduce the price if I built it myself, which was surprising...

I would say that a lot of the price is the 22mm wood.

It doesn't need to be that thick surely. It's only cladding after all.

Have a look on sites like this.....

Ideally you should have a look at sheds to check the quality of them. That site doesnt give details of theor stockists, you have to contact them to get that information. You need to be looking at the thickness of the wooden frame, the covering, the quality of the floor etc.

Several threads in Home and Gardens forum on here about sheds.

Our shed which is 9 years old came from these people http://www.themalverncollection.co.uk/

Although ours was based on the Apex range it was adapted by them to suit our specific requirements which included raising the height of it and putting the door in the front of it. Was bought as part of an insurance claim to replace the previous one hence the adaptions.

I would Google Kybotech/GardenBuildingsDirect on MoneySavingExpert and then run several miles...

I'd buy something made of metal rather than wood myself.

Oakenclough Buildings at Garstang near Preston make very good sheds and Buildings.
My 10 year old 8x10 shed is as good as the day it was erected. Check them out at www.oakencloughbuildings.com

Dear v,

I have a TGB 10x8 heavy duty pent with 22mm cladding & associated heavy duty floor for which I paid just shy of £1300 two years ago, from a local garden centre (Highfields), just supply.
It was erected on a levelled, sub & slab base which cost a further £700 to a local builder.
I also did some research and it seems the cheaper stuff such as BillyOh is not just built down to a price but their service is too. Buy cheap buy twice etc.

The shed is excellent:

Jet

There must be local shed and garage manufacturers in your area, will be much much cheaper and you can visit their workshops and check out the quality before making a decision.

I visited a local place and they had the TGB in stock and seemingly get them made to order and then they install them.

Security is sorted - almax.

I am near Edinburgh so if anyone can recommend someone that would be great.

Down the line I would like to be able to insulate the shed, but at the moment my priority is to have something futureproof - so I do not want some tat that will only last a couple of years.

With that in mind, what would be on your shed checklist in terms of quality of materials used. Like I said, the TGB did look well built, and the only other stockist I know of are Dobbies who charge even more.

And I should change my name to 'twoshedsV' - as we are getting two!

I bought my shed from Dobbies (or GBC who actually make them) and it cost a lot - roughly £1800 for an 8x6!

However, having had sheds in the past that did not wear well after a few years, I wanted something future proof so was happy to spend the money.

The base price wasn't roo bad, but then I added upgraded cladding, pressure treated floor timbers, pressure treated roof slats (over the felt so hopefully should last for years), I also had it installed and went for the security pack.

I chose to remove all the windows as well as it's purely for storage.

It is a fantastic shed, the frame is really well built, diagonal bracing all round, etc. and it looks like it may outlast my house biggrin

I'd say, if you are looking for something decent, then give GBC a look. Yes you will pay more for it, but you will get what you pay for!

Now Mrs Chimp wants us to build a second, larger shed/garden room to have a bar, poker room set up in the garden smile

P.S. I am just outside Edinburgh as well mate, but GBS will deliver/install throughout the UK - you might just need to wait a few weeks.

I'm in Falkirk, my 8'x6' pent roofed shed cost £300 about 6 years ago from a local shed supplier.
It's been well looked after, gets a coat of garden colour stuff every second year and it is still as new. i did have to get the roof re-felted but that was a precaution more than anything else.

OP. I took delivery of a TGB 10x8 potting shed with upgrade cladding (but not floor). Really rather pleased with the fit and finish of the shed, it's very solid and the fittings are all good quality.

I looked at a fair few sheds at local garden centres before going for a TGB. It wasn't cheap (also about 1500 odd) but I wanted the quality.
