Dropped my helmet this morning
Discussion
I dropped my AGV Horizon this morning and sent it bouncing across the garage floor
So, since I now need to go shopping again I need some advice on new helmets.
I really liked my AGV over the 2 years i've had it so am tempted to get another, but the lure of Schuberth being 'the quietest' and flip front is very tempting, although I have never had a flip front before. AGV's own flip front is better looking to my eyes and also a bit cheaper than the Schuberth so does anyone have any experience with the AGV Compact?

I'm sure a more knowledgeable poster than me might chime in and tell me I'm wrong but I remember seeing a video by Arai saying it was ok to drop a helmet and it doesn't cause damage as there needs to be something inside the helmet in order for it to have caused damage. Which is why they recommend changing the helmet after any kind of spill where your head hits the ground even slowly, but not after just dropping it.

I think the OP needs the slenderest of excuses to go shopping...
My first was a flip front, thought it would be easier with specs, and felt claustrophobic in a full face one. I've had full face lids ever since! Got over the claustrophobia, specs were no harder to put on, quieter, and less bulky. And apparently you gain no advantages when trying to buy milk in Morrisons, you still have to take it off.

My Arai was hanging from a hook on the garage ceiling and fell, onto concrete. Arai offer a service where they will, for the cost of P&P, examine the helmet and x-ray it and advise whether it is damaged or not. I sent it off, it came back with a clean bill of health (and a new side pod!). Obviously I don't want to destroy any shopping excuses, but your hat may well be OK, especially as it dropped from much les height.
As an aside, I was actually lid shopping at the weekend and although I don't think I want a flip front, the guy in J&S was telling me that if I did, he would recommend the Shoei over the Schuberth every day. I think I'm going to go for a Shoei GT-Air.

I've had a black AGV compact for about a month now. It sits along side my Arai chaser V.
It's a bit noiser, but I wear ear plugs all the time so it's much the same. It's my first modular lid and I can't complain for the price. Comfy, practical and the drop down sun visor is nice this time of year.
My Arai feels more snug (?) there's certainly a lot more internal padding, and because of the flip front there's quite a bit of space between mouth and the lid, felt weird at first but got used to it and was nicer once I fitted my comms system.
The cut outs for the AGV comms ear pieces mean you can fit any, much cheaper system too.

The helmet doesn't looks too bad to be honest just a small dig in the paint at the back and some scratching to the top of the visor (not in line of site)
I thought once helmets were dropped they were write-offs but maybe they are better made nowadays and can withstand a drop better.
I do love a bit of bike shopping but I am off to Germany on the bike in September so could do without the expense of replacement right now. Maybe i will look at replacing nearer the end of the year.
Cheers guys
ETA yes the drop down visors are great!

Helmets work by compressing the polystyrene foam inside with the mass of your head as it rapidly decelerates in the event of a crash. The polystyrene itself is very light, so without your head or something else heavy inside the helmet, the polystyrene will not self-compress under it's own mass under rapid deceleration in the event that you drop the helmet on the floor. I think a dropped helmet should be ok.
