We're looking to replace the patio than came with our new build:

A neighbour has the same house and we're looking for near enough the same design and size, a little larger area though.

A local landscaper has quoted us £5825 to removed the old patio and disposal of arising, lay and point the new patio, supply / install pebbles.

The slate comes in 11.2m packs, we would need at least two packs and they're £770 ea (i'm guessing the landscaper will get trade?)

My gut feeling tells me this is quite high, but I live in the Aberdeen area where trade prices are always high.

Any thoughts? Worth getting a quote from further a field?

Well I wouldn't get the pebbles 'installed' between the patio and the grass like your neighbours did, seems like a recipe for disaster when mowing the lawn!

To me £5k is pretty high considering laying a patio isn't that hard for a job that shouldn't take more than a couple of days.

Thanks, reading other threads on PH, seems £5825 is a bit high!

We're about to get 70 SqM of patio laid, the old stuff dug up and then new stuff put down with one or two tweaks added. £6K.

Your pricing is over priced.

When I was looking to get our patio done the suggested rule of thumb was materials make up 20% of the total cost. I got three quotes before making a decision.

What exactly does your quote cover?

As you are in the Aberdeen area why aren't you using granite?

I've just had a pathway replaced (28 sq m): removing old slabs, all groundwork, laying granite paving including a raised door step, resin pointing and a length of Aco drain, for just under £3.5K split roughly 1/3 paving, 2/3 the labour and remainder of the hardware. I sourced the paving separately myself. Your slate is £70 sq m? Wow - my granite was £31.50 sq m all in.

If the contractor reckons he can do it in a couple of days I'd find someone else PDQ! My 20sq m patio took just under a week to dig out (solid clay - horrid stuff), lay a concrete base then mid-range slabs bedded on top. About £2750 inc soil disposal.

We had this done recently.
90 sqm of paved area, about 20m of sleeper retaining walls, approx 40 tonnes of earth moved then indian sandstone laid and pointed, plus old pavers removed.

Was around £7700 all in which we thought was fantastic. Based in Bucks.

yours sounds slightly high?

I got my slate paving from here after a much larger quote for slate from my paver (who was supplying it at cost)
http://www.nustone.co.uk/blue-black-slate-paving-p...

Works out at significantly less than half the cost of yours and the quality was excellent. The chap said it was indistinguishable from the slabs that he uses and now gets all his from here.

Blimey you lot are paying big money ,we had 13X18 foot of slabs put down , very well done I might add a couple of years ago by a local landscaper ,he only charged us £350 plus materials, a ton bag of sand and the slabs.
Not as posh as your slabs ,but heyho.

Looking at the pictures the OP's garden will require minimal digging up and area prepping as there is already existing slabs, and as it is a new build the garden will probably be easy to dig anyway...

I'm guessing they're not using the nastiest slabs on the market and not laid like a bag of st.

In most cases you get what you pay for.

For what the OP has been quoted I'd expect all my enemies to be buried under it as part of the deal.

Thanks for all the replies, I've just emailed the chap who quoted £5800 to tell him we won't be progressing his quote further.

I can't bring myself to tell you what we paid for out decking, annoyed with myself for paying Aber-disney prices, so making a stand. Would have done the work myself in the past but my knees are shot now frown
