Interested to hear the opinions of the knowledgeable people here.

Not me, but curious as to whether it is possible to be genuinely large (as in 300lbs+ large) and be capable of any reasonable endurance? Not thinking of big blokes moving heavy weights, more around day in, day out, more like a half marathon+ a day or 50 mile bike ride (as examples). Day in, day out, without showing the obvious effects smile.

I don't believe so, but happy to be educated otherwise.

Yes why not? Fat and fit or thin and unfit. I dont believe weight is the deciding factor.

Obviously running or cycling up hill will be more difficult with more weight. If you are lugging an extra 30% body weight around you will be slower but you can still be fit whilst doing it.

Not ideal though.

If you're doing that day-in-day-out I'd imagine you'd need to eat vast quantities to maintain the weight.

Of course this comes down to what does "fit" mean?

Yes I think you can. My friend was playing rugby at prop a few years ago and at 19 stone he was very fit and endurance was excellent.

19 stone here. I play both rugby league and rugby union and currently run 3 times a week

Did 21 miles last week and am doing my first half marathon in 7 weeks time. Have currently lost 2 stone and aiming for another 2

Am I fat - yes. Am I fit - I wouldn't say so yet but am definitely getting there

I would say it is possible to be heavy and fit but not fat and fit IYSWIM

Yep, although not nearly as many as when I weighed in at 22.5 stone

Goes back to my days playing at uni. We were sponsored by the local kebab shop and my training top bore the legend:-

6'3". Many people express surprise that I am as heavy as I am as I do carry it reasonably, but that's not disputing the fact that I need to lose some. In discussion with my diabetes nurse and we have agreed that she will be happy with me at 16.5/17 stone so that is the aim

A mate of mine was the same. Played regular Premiership rugby at 19st and (he's 6') and was carrying a fair bit of insulation during his career.

Good luck. I don't see how loosing a bit of weight can do most people any harm - unless they're playing front row rugby!

I'm not daft enough/don't have the technique for the front row. Easy enough in RL but no idea what I am doing in a Union scrum so I stick to being a pusher wink

It's definitely possible.

But staying fat and fit for a long period is less likely; I'd imagine most either shed the weight or can't keep up the exercise indefinitely.

My reasonable guesstimate is somewhere in the 6-7k cals a day range, which, as about 2/3rds of the infamous Phelps diet, is a lot.

By fit, I mean capable of doing somewhere around the equivalent (if possibly less stressful) of a 70.3 day in, day out, without appreciable effect, either in terms of physical impact (injuries, down time and the like) or anything like the expected weight loss and/or muscle gain.

I'm not thinking of rugby players with a bit of padding, more 180 ish lbs person carrying something like 100 lbs+ of wobble.

Having been 280 myself & now in the 180s, I know the stress it causes on the body, plus I have other doubts (general and specific to my query).

I'm going with no.....and I think the idea of an 18 stone rugby player with 20% fat is used by actual fat people as a reason why they are fit because they walk the dog each day.
