CERAMIC COATINGS
Discussion
youtube.com/watch?v=O1bXPNy1Yn4 Any thoughts you had about the effectiveness of ceramic coatings on headers will be taken care of about 1/2 way through this video. I really like this as a data point because Westec has a very good reputation and in this video ceramic coatings is a side issue so probably not a hidden agenda lurking. If the link above doesn't work start on u tube with 8 into one headers go to the second page near the top and you will find a video called header theory. if the link is not working maybe one of our younger more tech savvy members can help the old guys figure it out. I've done it to my Cobra. I used a silver "like" color. It aged after 7k miles and of course chipped at the leading edge where rocks would hit. The four pipes in the engine well did very well.
I also did panels as well, in trunk & engine bay in grey, and they look like the day I had it done. They can also be polished up (the panels).
You must use a top shop for this stuff

I had Zircotec (spelling?) on my Noble headers and it was immediately obvious under the clam where the heat was going.
Of course the Noble being turbocharged made this a "more" necessary addition than say a n/a Chevy,
That said I have a ceramic coating on my s/c headers and I don't have any concerns about clam temps.
PS Zircotec (black) appeared to be indestructible, no discoloration or cracking.

For us on this side of the pond Zircotec http://www.zircotec.com/ is the way to go. Not cheap but probably worth every penny.

Zircotec is well worth the money (about £1000 for an Ultima exhaust) and it is amazing how soon after shutting down the engine you can touch the exhaust without a burn.
Paul
£1000 welll worth the money for a ceramic coating ....... really??Paul
Just to make the pipes a little cooler??
I could get half a dozen bikini clad virgins to blow on it for that money......... maybe not good looking ones ....... maybe not technically virgins but still ..... well worth £1000 to cure something that is just a bit annoying??

Your profile says you are in Walsall, so I am going to have to call you out on that. Had you said ONE virgin then it might have slipped by... but half a dozen?? In Walsall?? Nae Chance!! errmm p.s., before somebody that knows my car quite well pops up, i should also add my exhausts are also ceramic coated but half the price of Pauls. I was in a dark place last night.

Thanks Dave, that's made me laugh!
To the topic point tho'.... I've Zircotec'd my exhaust and can back up the comments about how it reduces the under clam temps. For me though, it's not that the coating allows me to work around the exhaust faster after shut down, it's that while the engine is running there's less heat in the engine bay and therefore, lower air temps on the engine intake.
The money spent on the coating, therefore, had an immediate performance benefit too. What do people say: 1deg of air intake is roughly equal to 1bhp? If that's true, I gained about 10bhp on my car, so it was about £100 per bhp as a by-product of the Zircotec.
It may be expensive, but I'd recommend it to any Ultima owner, as part of a series of other heat management mods.

I got my headers Camcoated. After 5 or 6 years they started to flake on the outside radius of the bends. They are now largely uncoated and look tatty, considering a zircotec coat (if possible, not sure if they can coat already coated items). Plus they are just round the corner from me,
Would be interested to hearing of anybody that has had zircotec for any length of time to see how long/well they have lasted.
Anyone had their pistons ceramic coated ?
