Heading to Falmouth from Bristol in a few weeks, and am tempted to take the motorbike down if the weather's good. Don't want to spend the whole journey on M'way/DC so wondering if there's a more fun alternative (without taking all day).

Was thinking of tolerating the M5 to Exeter, then cutting across Dartmoor instead of the A30, but having little knowledge of Cornwall I'm open to better ideas.

Thanks in advance.

Either jump on the A39 at Bridgwater and enjoy the North coast all the way down, or M5 to Exeter followed by B3312/B3357 to Tavistock and A390 the rest of the way. It really depends on the day of the week and the time of year whether you'll hit commuter traffic or Emmets, but time it right and with some luck you could get a nice clear run.

There's really only one road in and out of Cornwall so you don't have much choice really. When you get down a bit you could cut across to St Austell, go through Truro and on to Falmouth that way. Would maybe be a bit more enjoyable!

You could also go to Plymouth on your way down, then Liskeard and then onto St Austell Etc.

Take the A390 to Lostwithiel and on to St Austell. After Sticker take the B3287 towards Tregony and turn left onto the A3078 on to St Just in Roseland and then on to St Mawes. Have a bite to eat in St Mawes, continue along the front, up to the castle and continue back up to the A3078. Head back to St Just in Roseland and take the left turn signposted to the King Harry Ferry.
Continue down to the KHF and take it across Carrick Roads to the Feock side. Take the B3289 up to the A390 and head to Falmouth.

This, or the north coast on the A39 Atlantic highway all the way (I have never driven the exmoor bit, but it is a good driving road by all accounts). Both far more interesting but slower than the a30.

The problem with the modern world is mainly two things where driving/riding is concerned.

1, The modern trunk road and its numbering
2, Sat Nav, meaning we are all told which way to go and no longer think for ourselves

The (or should that be what once was) the A361, now the B3227 from Taunton to Stibb Cross where it meets the A388. This was the old A361 for most of its route until the new road was built to Barnstable.

So, many miles of ex A road sight lines and road quality but with only B road traffic. smile

Come off the m5 at taunton, head towards minehead and explore exmoor, then get back on the north devon link road back to the m5.

yes The section of the B3227 from South Molton to Stibb Cross has always had that number.
It was never part of the original route of the A361 prior to the creation of the NDLR.

From South Molton the old A361 is now the B3226/unclassified - https://goo.gl/maps/7DbhF

M5 to junction 27. Turn right to Bideford etc and follow the A39 all the way down to St Columb Major. Pop back on to the A30 for a few miles and then head for Truro (at Carland Cross roundabout) and then on to Falmouth. I wouldn't bother going anywhere near St Austell or St Mawes. St Mawes is a dead end and the ferry access roads are rubbish. St Austell area just a bit pony allround. ;-)

Indeed we are. Which is why I left Cornwall in 2003 and have never missed the place! ;-)

I used to use all the roads/routes you mentioned. Tedious is a reasonable word to describe them too!
