motor? I bought my 2002 A4 TDI last year on 185,000 miles and nothing **touch wood** has gone wrong- so far- but I do worry, 90% of the miles have been done on the motorway- by me and all of it's life.

Realistically what could start going wrong?

I'm sure knowing the VAG business ethos, the injection pump will be very reasonably priced....

Bearings reaching their end of life. Rubber components perishing. Turbo dying.

Lots of fun.

Preventative maintenance is key here

Age kills cars a lot of the time, not mileage.

If your cars a 2007 model as a opposed to a 1997 model for example, I'd expect that the 97' may have more issues arise.

Not necessarily more serious or expensive though.

Merely lulling you into a false sense of security. Doom lays ahead.

Anything and everything. Lots of consumables like wheel bearings, clutches etc last 100k miles so you can expect the replacement ones to be approaching 100k miles. Water pump, likewise. Turbo is a biggie, if it goes on a long run at night it just might burn all the sump oil and trash your engine. Head gasket, maybe. Most of the suspension if it's not been replaced already. Bushes in particular get ignored and can make a car dangerous.

As others have said, it's about maintenance. Keep inspecting it and fix stuff that comes along. The 1.9 VW TDi lasts pretty well, mostly. Rather you than me though, I'll stay with my 108k mile Mondeo petrol, thanks. Good luck.

It flew through it's last MOT without a single advisory- I know this doesn't cover turbo etc but still?

Lots of items are sealed by plastic or rubber. These things age over time, particularly in cold/hot cycles. Other items corrode in time too.

My A4 Tdi got to 195k and imploded. Sort of. Well, it emptied the whole of its coolant into the engine in a very very short amount of time. Either massive head gasket failure, or hole in the block. For a £900 car it wasnt worth investigating. I know it had the head off and skimmed in the past so put it down to that.

Wouldnt put me off another car of that age, depending on money. It cost me £900, did 10,000 miles in 6 months needing just 1 wheel bearing, and then was worth nearly £200 as scrap. Cheap as chips.

Depends on what's been replaced already. The suspension bushes and dampers probably aren't up to much if they're original. Wheel bearings, maybe?

The VW specialist said it genuinely looked like it had done less than half the miles. Motorway miles must have been kind to it...

Funny you should say that, the wife's Skoda's front lower control arm bushes (which are a VW/Audi part) went at about 100k miles. hehe

I suspect age plays a major part in rubber bush degradation too.
