BBC news reporting a large explosion at a temple in Bangkok, initial reports that it is a bomb.

Sad day for one of my favourite cities.

I hate to jump to conclusions...

But every time I go to Phuket, and that's most years, it seems to be more and more Islamic.

It would be devastating to Thailand should this turn out to be Islamic stuff and it begins to happen more regularly.

Fingers crossed it's just political not religious.

Is there not infact almost a small scale civil war between the government and the muslims in the south near the Malaysian border?

there is and the muslim terrorists have killed thousands but it gets very little coverage, so it came as a bit of a shock that when i was in Thailand a friend was advised not to cross in Malaysia by land.

RIP to those killed in this blast, its about time the country was more open about its threat from terrorists

It was a few years ago on average 5 murders a week by the death cult of peace. don't know if its still as bad. If only Thailand had stayed out of iraq and Afghanistan.

The explosion is being reported in Thai media as occurring at a shrine near the Grand Hyatt Erawan hotel. Having been in that precise location there would almost certainly be many people around and it wouldn't be surprising (sadly) for the death toll to rise.

I've always felt safe in Thailand, even taking my toddler son there coinciding with one of their many coups having previously experienced the yellow ribbon one.

I do hope this isn't religiously motivated, it's such a special country.

I found an app called periscope which allows sharing of live user generated broadcasts, this one recently finished but I think allows you to watch a recording of the scene shortly afterward - I haven't watched it all so cannot give assurances to nsfw content, initial scenes have emergency services in attendance and sadly a white sheet on the ground.

If you are going to use a motorbike as a bomb, why detonate on a junction on a main road?
Why not drive into one of the big tourist areas jam-packed with people ?

Is this how it was delivered?

Some reports appear to suggest it may actually have been a gas cylinder in a car (i.e. accidental explosion) rather than a bomb? Not seen anything conclusive either way.

At least 15 now dead, and 2 other bombs have been found. Hopefully no more attacks will follow but it is highly likely in the southern border with Malaysia

We're only comparing reports here and what actually happened may not be known for sure as yet, but from Thai media there are now reports that the first bomb was delivered via motorcycle so-to-speak, and that the Thai army/police have prevented a second explosion in a nearby department store (Gaysorn Plaza). This could be wrong, I'm merely passing on info from a local source.

This was no accident and I would bet quite a lot of money it was an Islamic terrorist attack, something that is on the increase in Malaysia and Thailand

I certainly wouldn't like to bet against the R.O.P. Truly Tragic - loved the Land of Smiles when I visited a few years back.

huh, more islamic than when???

you'll anyway be well versed in the southern conflict as a regular visitor but as its bangkok its most likely political and non-southern - you know the army protecting democracy by taking charge until the majority can vote for the right party, that sort of stuff

anyway, all bets will be off once the weekender at bernie's ends

What the heck is that, that lands in the road, just the otherside of the barrier from a distressed woman?

Also, the red object that drops from the sky to the right of the image close to the tape end?

Nasty.
