I need to visit Peterborough tomorrow to get a passport.

I'll be having to hang around for it so does anyone have any suggestions on a decent (i.e. won't get my car bashed to fk) car park and is there anything there to kill a few hours?

.
Multi-storey car parks by main shopping centre (near train/bus stations) and just shops really. I'm sure females will love it, but I just go for a coffee.....

I went last week, the cinema is only a five minute drive from the passport office.

The cathedral is worth a look (and close by) if you're into that sort of thing.

Take your trunks and have a swim in the Lido.

A walk along the river.

Some good beers at the Bull Hotel. (If not driving)

Some retail therapy in Queensgate and Bridge Street.

Drop into my mums, she'll make you a cup of tea.

Isn't Peterborough overwhelmed with Eastern European migrants? - maybe a trip to the local Polish supermarket would be interesting and educational?

Just make sure you are out of Peterboro by nightfall. My brother inlaw and his friends were involved in an unprovoked attack there, even the police said stay well clear of Peterborough.

All the Eastern Europeans will be at work, doing the jobs we did not want, leaving the town to our home grown jobless.

I don't know how long you will be waiting but Burghley House/Stamford and Flag Fen are not too far away and closer there is the Nene Valley railway. There are BMW and Audi showrooms not far from the passport office as well.

You've answered your own question OP...

The answer is to frequent each of Peterborough's many car parks and park in each of them, survey the surroundings for a brief minute and then move to the next on the list.

When you follow the signs off the main road to the Passport Office you will get to the end of the street by the building they're in

Left at the tee junction would have you drive past the front door and onto short stay on street parking which wasn't long enough for me to risk it

nono
I thought

But my actual process took about ten minutes max and I coulda/shoulda

but risky

If you look right at the end of the street there's a multistorey visible right in front of you

I parked in there and bunged a couple of hours on the meter

They have phone payment set up which was good

I forgot to take enough change frown

If you have time after your interview you could wander round like I did and pop inside the nearby cathedral

Sometimes I like a church, I liked theirs

Fabulous ceiling painting

That's as may be but the bottom line is that Peterborough has gone from a very nice, middle class town to an immigrant and migrant dwelling and it's gone to the dogs.

The market multi-story is closest but the spaces are small... If you want slightly larger spaces on-street parking is available on a meter in Midgate, turn left, keep the passport office on your left then turn right. (PE1 1TN)

So as it was, I went, it was throwing it down, the lady in the passport office just looked at me and laughed when I asked her "Is there anything to see or do here that will take me 4 hours?".

They're going to post the passport.

So, was that the full ten minutes?

Where did you park in the end?

There should, perhaps be a Passport Office Wiki - maybe there is wink

They told me that last year's panic was mostly caused by people not reading the paperwork

Which might be true

Queensgate simply because it seems to be the one car park in Peterborough that isn't Pay and Display which is st when you don't know how long you will be.

Seems like just another city with a shopping centre tbh, maybe on a summers day I'd have stuck around but in the pissing rain I can look in John Lewis and Primark anywhere.

I've just been told my brother and I will be doing this very trip next week so I've read this thread with a vested interest!
I'll take on board the parking suggestions, so thanks for that thumbup

Just a related slight hi-jack....

If not Peterborough itself, what about surrounding villages and towns? I know Stamford is pretty, but I've done that a few times with a car show. Is anywhere else nearby worth a visit?

Thanks in advance, guys!

The guvner and I went for a wander round Oundle on the way back to the A14, because she'd been sent an offer from a hotel for a two night package and we didn't know the place

Well there's a couple of nice cafes, similarly a couple of nice looking pubs

We probably won't be spending a couple of days there, just to look at a public school

Stamford is nice enough, Burghley House is very nice to visit and walking around the grounds is free

Oakham is nice too, even if for a nice drive around the Rutland Reservoir as there is some good road and a gander at Top 555 Cars - some of the house's in Hambelton on the peninsular are really nice.
