I have been interested in this motor in the A6 since the car was released back in 2012. Never had the luck of driving one but a few vids on Youtube make it look like a rapid car. The 8 speed ZF is a good g/box, I am thinking an A6 with this engine would make a good family hack. Looks like around £26k gets you a 2012 model.

Are their any owners of this particular engine/gearbox in an A6 or variant that can offer their ownership experiences? Anybody done a ECU reflash for more power?

Cheers,

Yep I have one of them!

It's a 2014 allroad with THAT engine.

I've had it Superchipped to allegedly 380hp.

It really is an amazing engine . It will do 40 mpg all day , 45 with a light foot and when in dynamic is proper quick.

Part of the superchip thing is removing the limiter which resulted in a €1000 fine and a ban in France coming back from skiing.

The handling is a bit inert when really pushing but I've never had a better engine. With the exception of the V8 in my Radical but you have to rebuild that every 40 hours!!

It sounds good in dynamic too!

Good feedback thanks Jack. Is the tune an interceptor or reflash? I expect to go backwards on the handling front but have bought a weekend toy for that fix so happy to look at a more sedate family car. This seems like the best of what I can see for reasonable money right now.

Cheers

Anybody else? I guess that's why a search finds very little on these cars

I have had one for a little over a year and am very happy with it.

Very comfortable cruiser and quick enough to keep up with most things on the road.

I specified mine with the sports diff to create a diesel version of the s6. The handling surprised me. It grips like a limpet and will corner at crazy speeds.

My previous car was a 335i which handled very differently. More power than grip at the rear and a tendency to 'wag its tail'. The a6 is very different. I would not describe it as inert though. It's more that the huge grip and big torque makes it a little one dimensional compared to a more lively car.

It feels very grown up though and I would definitely recommend it.

Not much about them on the internet though, which I think reflects the fact that they never caught the attention of petrol heads in the same way as the 535d

The only negative, is that the gearbox and the engine are not massively well attuned. In manual mode the car pulls like crazy, but the auto settings tend to take the edge off the performance a little.

The downside of lots of gears and stupid emissions biased mapping.

The same ZF 8 speed box is used in the BMW 535d where it seems to be better mapped to the engine.

In the Audi it's all very smooth, but it doesn't always allow the engine to shine.

OK once you get used to it, but I initially found myself approaching a roundabout in auto where the torque converter loosens up. Then you floor it and ... nothing happens for a moment whilst the gearbox wakes up and then suddenly the car launches forward like a rocket.

Now I am used to it I think these little imperfections add to the character of the car

Imagine what it will be like in the Mk8 Golf with a 10 speed DSG box...

I've only done 20 miles but first impressions... seriously quick! The engine noise is intoxicating, the ride is just right (much better than my 9 year old A6 S Line) and the comfort inside is perfect. I am really pleased with it.

My spec is: Black Edition, Techno pack, Matrix lights, interior lighting and heated seats. I chose triple black and am really pleased with the finished result.

Thats a great spec! Does the the BiDi come standard with the active sports diff, or does this remain an option?

It's an option on these.

Most of my driving will be interplanetary type cruising.

I worked on the basis that the sports diff would really come into it's own on turn and squirt type roads. I rarely use country lanes and am too mindful of cyclists and horses to drive them at speed, so didn't spec the diff.

So far, it hasn't felt like I need it.

Thanks for confirming chief. I believe the trick diff makes a substantial difference to the feel of the car but since I am a used buyer finding a s/h car with it specced will be difficult. I haven't seen one for sale yet.

If ultimate handling potential had been at the top of my list, I think I would have chosen something much smaller and much lighter. That said, I am very impressed with the grip and the confidence that the car feeds back on fast A road driving. Last night was wet in Essex. You wouldn't have known it from the driving seat and the front end felt nailed down, much more so than my previous A6.

Matrix headlights are fantastic. They should be very high on your wish list.

Off to chat to a chap at my local Audi this weekend (some VIP event, lots of offers blah blah - assume it's aiming to shift old stock before the 16 plates come in)...

Anyway, cynicism aside the only thing that'll get me out of my A5 3.0TDi is an A6 BiTDi, ideally Avant. I assume the usual spec stuff that applies to A5s is worth looking for - Heated leather, S-Line or Black trim, B&O HDD Nav.

Anything else?

19 vs 20" wheels, what's the harshness like?

I've got a firm budget in mind so I'm not overly expectant that they'll be able to do a deal I'm happy with but I might get lucky!

Iain, Bose is standard on the Black Edition, B&O is an insane amount extra (about £6k). Heated leather needs adding. I have 20s and the ride is still very compliant.

I got incredible offers from Carwow when I was looking. My local Audi centre matched the best one and I saved over £10k. I would definitely recommend sitting in front of them with some offers printed off.

I may be swapping a V8 M3 for one of these soon... eek A 35 kilo Weimaraner is not really compatible with the M3.

The one I will be looking at Saturday is an early 2014 with 9000 km, and I have been given a very good trade-in price. Now overloading on Youtube videos and marbling at the trick the exhaust sound.

Possibly weird question but do all BiTdi come with the 75 litre (instead of 65 litre) tank, as I believe it is an option (5OM apparently) on non-quattro models, but not sure about this. Would be nice to have that extra range, after the 400 km on 63 litre of 98 octane currently...
