Notice Period Question
Discussion
If it's one week, the it's one week, not one week one day after you serve notice. Practical sensibility would suggest if you serve notice first thing in the morning then the whole day is still ahead of you and if you serve notice at 16.30pm and finish at 17.00pm then effective notice will begin the following day. The best thing to do is go for the assumptive close, with letter stating one week notice and also stating your last working day.
I'm just going through this. I handed my notice in first thing on a Thursday morning. My boss thought that this meant that I'd finish on the Thursday four weeks later whereas I thought that it would be to the Wednesday as surely the Thursday would count as the first day of notice worked. HR agreed with me so I'd go with that.

Am I right in thinking that a notice period starts the day after you hand your notice in? IE if it's a week and you hand it on on the Thursday then its starts on the Friday and you finish the following Friday?
I'm just a little confused.
Many thanks
If you hand your notice in today then next Friday would be your last day. One week.I'm just a little confused.

Well I handed it in approimately half way through my shift yesterday had to wait for the assistant manager to come in. I had stated that I was expecting to finish next Friday.
Spoke to the branch manager today and because of the other staffing problems, she did ask if I could do the shift that I was rota'd to do next Saturday for her and then come in on the Sunday to hand my keys in etc (as I would be closing up) as it was her, and she is not the reason I am leaving, I agreed to, as I really don't want to make things any more difficult for her.
Anyway, it gets me an extra days pay
Thanks everyone for the comments, they are appreciated as this is not something I have ever actually done before
